is it hooked up to some hoses and such?

those things are much louder when they are just plugged in w/out any air hoses compared to when they are up and running...

I was having a similar problem, and I was able to quiet the pump by building a device to contain the pump. I used a rubbermaid container, drilled 3/4 inch holes in each side and stuffed them with poly-fil, drilled 3/8 inch holes and ran the air hoses through them, sealing up excess with expanding foam. It is a fair ammount quiter, and, an added bonus is that the poly-fil should (hopefully) make the air it sends into the terrarium a fair bit cleaner! You could additionally place this inside a cardboard box.

Alternatively, I know Petsmart sells ( online and in their stores) Rena air pumps that are supposedly very quiet. Unfortunately, you also pay out the ass! But if quiet's what you want, you may want to give those a shot. PS, you need to get a pump rated for probably at least 50 gallons if you're working with a PMP. The first one I got was 10 gallons and it didn't put out anywhere near enough air. Good luck!

Mine is just the cheapest crap one I bought at the pet shop, and it's rather quiet.
I keep it in a cupboard, so that muffled the noise a bit and you really have to listen for it.

Oh I also put it on a sponge, because it rattled against the wood a bit.

This often works well, the best I've seen was a contraption someone rigged to hold the pump suspended in the air with rubberbands. The rubberbands acted like shocks for the pump, absorbing all the vibrations.

Usually, it's not a problem as long as you have it on a soft surface not touching anything beside it.

"A nation's hope of lasting peace cannot be firmly based upon any race in armaments but rather upon just relations and honest understanding with all other nations...

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed... The cost of one modern heavy bomber is this: a modern brick school in more than 30 cities. We pay for a single fighter with a half million bushels of wheat. We pay for a single destroyer with new homes that could have housed more than 8,000 people..."

I saw somewhere about putting it on a sponge...might help do the rubberband trick but from the bottom. Make sure to use your nasty ass bathroom sponge, of course
