Cannabis and Epilepsy
    #23420283 - 07/07/16 01:46 PM (7 years, 6 months ago)

Hello again Shroomery.

Before I make this post I want to say that I love weed in all of it's forms and uses. I've nothing against it at all.

I have a question though that may make me sound skeptical of it's use for epilepsy which, I am.

There's been reports of the CBD oil and/or bud (depending on the family) being used successfully for epilepsy. The majority however seems to be for children/dogs via CBD oil or edibles that do not have many tonic-clonic seizures so much as absence or myoclonic seizures.

They're many kinds of seizures but just a a brief summary I'm going to name only a few of the most common:
Absence - People generally space out/stare at nothing like they want to lala land for a minute.
Myoclonic - Brief jerking. Without a proper diagnosis people would simply think they're twitching or on drugs.
Tonic-Clonic - Full-fledged flopping like a fish seizures people usually associate epilepsy with.

I've been dealing with epilepsy for half of my life and it's getting worse and worse. My state is legalizing medical use soon but I'm a little impatient so I've jumped the gun and tried it myself. Honestly I've smoked since I was young so this wasn't exactly a health experiment.

My seizures start as myoclonic typically and then progress into tonic-clonic unless I sit perfectly still and do not talk.

I could sit here and boohoo but that's not my point. I'm not looking for sympathy but honestly they suck and it's driving me nuts.

I quit smoking for a while because it was making me too lazy. With higher seizure activity recently (and YES, I do see a proper doctor, neurologist and take meds that do help reduce my seizures) I decided to pick it up again.

It doesn't matter if I try oil, edibles, low-grade, high-grade ... It doesn't seem to help at all.

It actually seems that if I use for a few days straight and then stop, my seizure activity increases but I will admit that I have not done this enough times to call it definitive any more than coincidence.

Are there any adults here that use cannabis or any variation of it (even synthetic) to help their epilepsy?

If so does it work for you?

I've also got other family members with epilepsy that smoke a lot and use weed in various forms. It doesn't help them at all. Even "medical" bs we buy for 10x what it's worth.

I'm starting to feel like it's effectiveness is being blown out of proportion just so more people have an excuse to smoke more.

It's like "weed cures cancer" ... Okay it may have helped a few people but so did chemo and, plenty of pot users have obtained cancer even though they've smoked their whole life... and no, I do not believe for a minute that the fact they smoked it instead of eating it made a difference because there's plenty of dead people that tried it the "medical way".

So, is it just me that thinks it's really not that effective and people are just saying it's magical so they can get high? I really want to stress that if I had the ability to I'd hook everyone on this planet up with a doob so we can all enjoy it; I've nothing against pot.

I'm just bothered and really let down that it doesn't seem to be the miracle people claim for me nor my family/friends.

Every time someone tells me "oh just get some marijuana" when epilepsy comes up I feel "annoyed" (the nicest way I can word it).

TL;DR: Does cannabis in any form actually help your epilepsy at all?
I would love to hear from the folks it doesn't just as much as the folks it does.

Edited to nitpick at my own grammar which probably still sucks but hey

One thing comes to mind right away, CBD is what is used to treat epilepsy and most cannabis now adays was bred to be high thc to get people the most high.

As a result most strains have little to no CBD unless you find specific high CBD strains.

So before giving up I would advise either finding high CBD bud to try or getting some sort of CBD oil.

I had an old dog I had to put down recently (RIP) and she used to have semi regular seizures that would sometimes leave her very weak and wobbly for a few days.

She also had serious hip pain and was very generally sore, for awhile we gave her CBD oil and while it didn't make a drastic difference she didn't have any noticeable seizures for awhile and it seemed to help relax her and take away some of her pain especially when coupled with stronger pain meds. Sadly CBD oil isn't cheap so we only gave it to her some of the time, with dogs or kids you need oil with little to no THC to avoid getting them high which makes it pricier.

Everyone is different though, pretty sure some people actually get seizures from cannabis though it is a very very small percent.

Don't worry about me, I've got all that I need. And I'm singing my song to the sky

You know how it feels, With the breeze of the sun in your eyes. Not minding that time's passing by

I've got all and more, My smile, just as before. Is all that I carry with me

I talk to myself, I need nobody else. I'm lost and I'm mine, yes I'm free

Anecdotal observations aside, most of the formal research is in intractable epilepsy in children. These represent the "worst case" scenario where sometimes, the kids are in an induced coma they're seizing so much.

So right now, it looks like it works in extremely severe cases. Maybe a better question is whether it outperforms standard treatment in "regular" epileptic patients.

CBD can definitely help, and is a godsend in many cases.... Particularly children. However, seizures are complex & hard to manage. What works for one patient may not work for another. And complete cessation of seizures is rare, at least from what I've seen in my practice. What are treatments have you tried?
