Surviving as a digital nomad

I have this insatiable urge to wander out of my comfort zone and throw myself into an adventure across some exotic part of the world. I have little ties to where I currently live and my life is getting to the point where if I don't do it soon it's not going to happen.

I'm not above grafting to pay my way around the world, but it's nice to have something consistent to be able to fall back on to fund this dream.

I'm pretty sure even the most remote parts of the world have some semblance of the internet (and if not there's always satellite internet, which is getting pretty cheap)...

What would you do to make money using the internet? Nothing illegal, as that's kind of beyond the point (it'd be easier to do the in the real world :wink: ).

I'm looking for ideas.. I'm already aware of rent-a-coder sites. Like everyone, I'm looking for maximum turnover with minimal input (who wants to spend 10 hours staring at a screen in Nepal? :tongue:).

Cool thread OP. I know it's doable but I imagine it's not an easy feat. I know a select few generate revenue from blogging. If you have your own website you can get paid to advertise.

Interested to see how this turns out. The life of the nomad sounds super intriguing

Get some recording gear.
Structure a plan to record your travels and compile it into a video/documentary. Preferably with a theme of some sort... Maybe you do interviews, maybe you seek to capture each state, or extreme places, local festivals, historic places. Use this idea to build a Kickstarter or indiegogo/gofundme. If you plan well enough and offer supporters a video and perhaps a t shirt at the end of it you very well might get funded.

You could even offer high backers the opportunity to be interviewed for the movie. I've already thought this idea through and it would certainly work if you presented it in a professional manor, had a strong plan, and were dedicated to seeing it through (the hardest part).

It's also difficult to shoot good footage, conduct good interview, and edit it well. Many would say this detracts from the journey as well, but let's be real it would be very valuable and add a sort of goal to the travel.

Hey I'm trying to do the same thing! Well at least work from home. Lol.

Like other people have said coding is a pretty good way to do things. I've been working on learning java since it seems to be the one with the most work available.

If you aren't into object oriented programming then you can try HTML, CSS, and Java. Everyone needs a web dev!

I hate to say it but you almost certainly won't get a gig programming from home without a degree. If you're one of the .1% of people that is so dedicated and skilled at it that you manage to find work programming regardless, or build up enough skill to freelance, you might pull it off.

It sounds easier than it is, there are millions of people that know how to write code. There are not many people willing to pay for someone to do it remotely, without a degree or a strong portfolio.

I know I won't be able to do this without putting in the work, and I know I'll have to work at a company for a while. Working from home is endgame and from all the information I've acquired about getting a programming gig without a degree is fairly simple. You just have to prove you can code.

I'll be making programs and putting code on github and also helping with open source programs. It's probably gonna take until next year before I even think about trying to find a job, but I'm willing to put in the effort.

There are actually some really good ideas in this thread, thanks guys :laugh:.

I've got most of (2/3rds :wink:) of a BSc, so some of that obscure bullshit might be useful for something on my travels.

I'm also learning to code in python; I've been putting off learning how to code in depth and properly for years, but I'm slowly getting there.

The T-shirt idea to me seems like a good one. I reckon I could knock up stuff on the road that people back at home would buy, inspired by travel. The psy niche is a good one for unique stuff :wink:.

Keep 'em coming... the more diverse the pool of thought, the bigger my potential paycheck :tongue:.

Was reading about a couple that went to Korea to teach English and started a Youtube channel. They eventually quit teaching jobs to do youtube videos full time

You could run youtube channel from wi fi spots and just keep moving, it would probably be a good idea to build up followers before you left though. Dont just hope on plane with a camera and laptop and no solid plan.

I don't think you could run a printing company while travelling.  Where would you even store the packing materials for sending the goods lol.  :derp:


Personally I'd go for a down to earth idea like selling sunglasses / bottles of water / icecream in a cooler in a sunny area or maybe make some cheap jewellry up.

Then you've got WOOF or sofa surfing.  Many people try to travel on the cheap and most probably end up phoning someone to bail them out and get home.  :hehehe:

Don't just travel, move to another country. Take enough cash to set yourself up in a little flat and then find a job. Then you meet local friends, get to know the culture, have great travels whilst having a base. It's the best way to travel. I spent 6 years in South Africa, 3 years in the UK and 2 years in Switzerland. Now I'm back home in Australia. Having had all those places as a base to work from I've seen a lot of places and made great experiences. When you spend 12 months in a new country and you start to see the same thing happening again you really start to understand the culture, otherwise it can be hard to grasp really what is going on.

Every time I moved I just moved. I sold all my shit, bought a plane ticket, put my clothes in a bag and just went. There's always something wherever you're going as long as you're an open person.
