zappa literally can't admit that technology is quickly on the way to making him just as obsolete as a teenage min. wage worker

3D printed houses a reality in the next five to ten years
How 3D Printing is Affecting the Construction Industry

it may not exactly be a reality yet--but you said never and in this you are wrong

you kids seem to be focused on 3d printing and yet everything currently is
models or in labs to be trucked to a site, the very things zappa has been
saying this system cant get away from

not all jobs can be performed by machines even with technology developed over
the next 20 years, framing for instance is still going to be something only
humans will do and to be honest, a brick laying robot may never pay for it's
self even though there's on currently doing the jobs

I don't know that it will ever pay for itself because that fucker is going to need some serious maintenance as are any printers.  Concrete is a nasty substance that gets into everything.  But that bricklayer didn't have to spend any time tap tap tapping the bricks into level.  It was pretty precise..  Butter, set, move on.  Butter, set, move on.

the brick layer wasnt tapping bricks, he was tooling joints. the system is set
up so that it compensates for the movement in the walk boards caused by wind,
workers and it's own movement based on a laser that climbs each course as it's
completed

R&D on that robot was probably around $40mil, I'm sure something was added to
reduce the penetration of dust and other things to compensate for the corrosive
properties of the mortar. I work with 3 robots just like these, when we have to
call a factory tech it's fucking costly, keeping a certified tech on staff costs
more than 2 brick masons at current wages in the industry. based on what I've
seen in the last 30 years the robot is more precise than the average mason these
days but it's also half the speed of a single mason and of course it cannot use
it's own judgement on shit so that could lead to fuck ups unique to the robot

now, this robot is fairly generic in that it's like all the others in industrial
settings, a single arm programmed to do a specific task, the heads on the robots
are engineered for the tasks they perform on the specific job. let's assume the
brick head will be dedicated as they are with each robot on an assembly line.
that head needs hydraulics or pneumatics to operate it, given that bricks can be
delicate it needs proximity sensors and pressure switches to ensure it does
crush the bricks, it needs sensors to read the laser that guides it and sensors
to measure the brick to ensure it's not picking up a partial and a sensor to
ensure it's not lifting 2 halves of a brick. there needs to be a prox that tells
it when it's reached the travel limit and can lay the brick, it needs to be able
to compensate for removing bricks from it's supply, so each brick removed will
require more movement to lift the next so those proxes will need to be variable
and each prox and reed switch is sensitive to vibration and dust so they'll need
at least one person there at all times to maintain the robot

so now we come to the conclusion, while it can be done, is it feasible? not at
the current level of technology and probably not in the foreseeable future. the
operating expense will exceed it's value. you're looking at $500k in purchase
price for such a specialized piece, add in maintenance, parts and labor, the
need to keep a lot of parts on hand including servo motors which can run $8000+,
prox switches at $500+, dedicated staff to make sure the robot can do the job,
such as someone to feed it bricks and mortar, the maintenance personnel, etc...
it's highly unlikely that this piece of the future will come to fruition based
on operating costs alone bu it's a good experiment in what the potential for
robotics are

Well we'll never have robots who can install windows, so we should get you to the cryo chamber NOW, lest civilization loses out on humanity's wealth of window installation knowledge.

It's funny watching Zappa desperately cling to the past in an effort raise his profession above all the others as somehow being too complex to be overtaken by automation.

This is what it must have been like to watch all those poor souls in Detroit clinging on to humans building cars...

I suspect they already are, it seems like plumb and level are no longer in vogue
and I've had to teach someone with 35 years of experience (a lot of people
actually) what the marks on a tape measure and on subflooring mean

notice the circles, the square and the diamond? many tape measures have
corresponding marks and most people have no idea what those are for

what's ridiculous, that people put down Advantech® subfloor or that they use nail guns

If they produced architectural drawings in CAD format it wouldnt be that difficult to program a robot to execute it. A step above driverless cars but well within reach. Of course I see where Zaps coming from. Its seems to diffusely complex and impposible to program for but they said the same thing about Go.

as zappa already mentioned, these devices need a flat, smooth surface to work on,
something pretty rare on construction sites, there are too many variables to
program these things to build houses including with the use of CAD drawings and
these robots are too simplistic to perform more than one task so you either have
to write a program for each function on each home in addition to providing tracks
for it to run on or you have to buy dozens of robots and tracks for them

It isn't just the programming.  There is a lot of improvisation in building a new house and remodeling is all improvisation.  And then there is the architectural work.  Even with CAD plans and on a new house I have had to make changes.  They are in no way infallible and the architects are always grateful that I go to them before I go to the client.  Usually the client never knows.

so how many years have you been in construction?

Since I was a young child actually... I'm a professional carpenter at my fathers business, 'Joseph's Manger'. Thinking about taking the spiritual path pretty soon though. Who knows we'll see; my friend John has something going over at a nearby lake or river, some kind of commune. I might check it out.

But really that's besides the point. If you can't see that bipedal humanoid robots are on the verge of existence and that those robots combined with the other machines we have and that will be developed will be able to do just about anything a human can do, if not everything a human can do, that your foresight is lacking imho.
