What year did you start gaming?

I would say as soon as I could hold a controller, but its definately around 1998, when I was 4. My games consisted of mario kart 64, diddy kong racing, goldeneye, donkey kong 64, and chameleon twist, for the nintendo64. Zelda was a game I couldnt comprehend yet, but it was also 'there'.

I made this thread because it fascinates me how each generation of gamers will have their own particular memories of games, whether its 8bit, 32bit, 64bit or some other HD version.

There is some kids that grew up talking shit in Modern warfare, or playing minecraft for their very first games. This strikes me as weird, because I would say them are odd games to begin with, but then how would I know?

All I know is that there is probably a 4 yearold playing dark souls, or amnesia, and probably scared to shit, but is starting their gaming soul right now, and I acknowledge that.

1985.... 3 years old.. Colecovision... Commodore 64.. Atari 2600.. my uncle had them all
1986 I got a NES for christmas.. I basically grew up on Zelda

Epic collection, quite some retro consoles, I wish I could try them games out. I got an atari 7200 with tons of games but it just doesnt work, who knows if the games work...

1994, I guess. I was five years old and got a SNES with Donkey Kong Country and it fucked me up for life and is probably the root cause of all my interests in ecology and such. I possibly had DOS Prince of Persia a little bit beforehand, but my earliest memories of playing a game are all SNES related.

Would have to ask my mother what year she got me the NES, think it was 89 or 90 -- got a SNES not long after.

Used to play around on my grandfather's Atari 2600 and Pong machine prior to that though.
Also an old Pac Man tabletop game at the small restaurant that was on the US side of the border.

My parents had an atari 2600 when I was young.  Then a few years later my parents bought an IBM clone 8088 pc for their business, which I promply broke by deleting important DOS system files. :laugh:  I did a LOT of gaming on that thing.  With its bad ass 4 color CGA screen and 640k of memory instead of the crappy 512k!  It even had a 20 meg hard drive in it which was not normal for most home systems at the time.

Played me a ton of the original SSI gold box AD&D games, the original Ultima series games, etc.

My first system that was *mine* was the original NES

I started in 2006, I was 10 years old at the time. My parents went to great lengths to control the media I was exposed to. Thus, I had only played educational games (putput series, spy fox, ect) before then and I wouldn't have considered it gaming. Then I started playing runescape and halo combat evolved which I convinced my parents to see as a social experience so they wouldn't object.

Everyone has great stories so far, I love it.
I never heard anyone arcade religiously, I guess a little DDR in the name of jesus wont hurt. :wink:

I don't head to arcades anymore. They are over priced and extremely rare now.

I may have started in 1997 or 8, not sure really. What I´m sure of is that my first ever game was Super Mario World on the NES, had me instantly in love, especially the coop part. From there on games were a steady company troughout my life, and I´m glad for spending those hours daddling.

A few years later me and some friends started playing silent hill, dino crisis, metal gear solid and resident evil on the ps one... man that was epic shit.

Super mario world was for the super famicom not the NES

I used to do shit tons of arcades back in the day.. (late 80s/90s) but they were in every shopping center and mall in America..
and games all cost 25 cents... the 'expensive' games might cost 50 or later on for the nicer games.
That all changed though. Used to be you could just take a roll of quarters and you could have good fucking time and play a shitload of games.

Nowadays you practically can't even find a game in an arcade that costs less than a dollar.. some games cost 2 dollars
That is if you can even FIND an arcade.. they are much more rare now.. they are practically an endangered species these days.
Except in Japan. Japan still has arcades.. tons of them. Massive arcades, that span whole department stores on multiple floors, insane stuff

Only have 3 pictures, that don't even come close to showing the complexity and massive size of this place, wish I took more

like 10% of the 'gumball' and toy machines




Just one small area, in a massive place. They had rows and rows and rows of every arcade game out there. I had a nerdgasm.

Chicago has this ballin bar-arcade where all the games are 25 or 50 cents. Fun times. Doesn't look quite as cool compared to typical Japanese overperformance though.

And I think I probably started gaming around 1999 when I was 4. I remember playing Twisted Metal, Mario Party 2, Mario Kart, and Soul Reaver

when I was 3-4 years old so 90 or 91. NES was my first system and played Contra, Final Fantasy 2 and Mega Man constantly. Then the SNES shortly after.

I posted way back already in the thread.  Atari 2600, and an IBM PC clone 8088 (like the 8086).  MY first system that was "mine" and not my parents but the original NES,  Got it about 2 month safter it first released.
