MJ Allergies?
    #23176247 -

So about 3 years ago I started working on my buddy's organic herb farm. At this same time, I was smoking some pretty old herb (had been sitting around in a bag for a year), rolled up in a spliff with some hash. Well, one day I came home from working on the farm and I could not breathe at all. Every breath I took felt like I had to come up for air from underwater - didn't even sleep because I could barely breathe!

Went to the doctor and found that I had bronchitis. Since then, there have been times where I am able to smoke as freely as I want for months until the wheezing catches up with me. Nowadays I can only vape, and even then a couple weeks later and I have to stop smoking for months. I now even have allergic reactions in which my throat or skin itches from merely touching it, or even being around it.

Before this incidence I never experienced any type of marijuana allergy. Has anyone else experienced this before? What did you do to remedy it? Am I ever going to be able to smoke again? Does the fact that the herb is organic have anything to do with my allergic reactions?

Essentially, have any of you ever had no allergies to weed, then somehow got allergies, and then over time the allergies went away?

That sounds more like rhinitis, which is very common around farms.

In the Pacific Northwest especially, there is a lot of mold that can cause it. Pollen can too, however.

I have a feeling a lot of it may be psychosomatic, especially when you are high.

The bronchitis is probably from an infection, not an allergy to something.

Smoke (MJ or otherwise) can cause the loss of cilia in the esophagus and inflammation that can lead to chronic cases of it.

Generally that's how you get allergies.

Once people started growing medical MJ for example, there was a sharp increase in allergies from its pollen in those areas.

I went through the same thing man. I was a fairly high level grower untill recently. After a few years of harvests it got so bad that I couldn't even be involved in the trimming process. It seems like it just gets worse and worse every time I deal with large amounts of pot. I doubt it will get better. I'm sorry.

One thing is getting allergies when you are around a massive amount of its pollen.

Another is getting a spontaneous allergy in the presence of a bag of dried buds which won't happen.

Also, allergies don't come and go, and come back again unless it's seasonal like rhinitis.

Hahaha.  Bullshit.  Medicinal cannabis plants are female; there is no airborne pollen from them.

Haha. Wrong.

Quote:
A medical marijuana grower without atopy who previously tolerated personal recreational marijuana use developed contact urticaria and pruritus with  subsequent handling of the plant. The patient demonstrated positive Cannabis leaf prick-prick skin testing reactions and elevated serum specific IgE. A negative patch test result further supported the presence of an IgE-mediated reaction in this case

Quote:
Although still relatively uncommon, allergic disease associated with C sativa exposure and use has been reported with increased frequency. Allergic reactions and even anaphylaxis attributed to C sativa have been noted with sensitization associated with pollinosis, Cannabis use, potential plant cross-reactivity, and occupational exposure. With state laws allowing medical and in some cases recreational use of marijuana, there is a growing potential for legitimate personal and commercial exposure. The evolving legal status of C sativa, its highly prevalent use throughout the world, and the varied forms in which it is used could translate into its growing role as a clinically relevant allergen that might be encountered

I understand the difference between male and female plants, I'm not an idiot.

There must be *some* male plants however, to have seeds.

Also, I'm sure a lot of it is grown outside on a massive scale, to get your cheaper-grade shit.

I'm not wrong, and I know you aren't an idiot.
There are some male plants.  Very few, and very isolated.  Certainly no fields, and certainly not enough to cause an allergen problem to much of the population.

Many will deny you can, but yes you can.

For some, it is a sign of inflammation throughout system. Consider fasting from breads, milk, cheese - purty much anything that's not a veggie. no booze.

Helped a guy I know. He will still get it if he starts to eat inflammatory foods again.

Nasal spray helps but it is a band-aid - your body will express itself in other ways potentially (skin conditions).

Peace!

Yes I am.  The plant in the foreground is female.  Please try again.

And a field of males was my point.  There is zero pollen flying off of a field of females.

What about any other airborne particulate? I looking at trimmers specifically here. I imagine someone can get a case of trichomeosis or something just as easily. Any sort of farming and plant processing tends to produce massive amounts of airborne particulates.

I've developed short term allergies caused clearly by a particular strain an old roommate of mine once got a very large quantity of. After copious processing for edibles and other...endeavors..., every time I smoked that particular strain I got a noticeable allergic response. Went away after he ran out a week later.

Sounds like a good reason to quit smoking.  I certainly wish I could avoid seasonal allergies right now.  My allergies are terrible.  I have to take loratadine 24/7, and most days need pseudoephedrine and/or diphenhydramine to be able to work or sleep.

I just get severe rhinitis.

Your breathing issue sounds freaky.

I really do not smoke much if at all anymore. I usually smoke/vape for a week, and then lay off smoking for a few weeks/months, and then return to it until I cannot do it any longer due to the wheeziness.

Just sucks because I never had anything like this happen until I started smoking that shitty weed and working around tons of organic herb! It only happens when I smoke or touch it though. It is not noticeable when ingesting orally... why would this be the case?

Well, while I really really doubt you will find an entire field of just males, there are most certainly fields with male plants out there. Why else would the article referenced mention a sensitization to pollen? While most MMJ IME has been higher-grade indoors or hydroponically grown buds, most (if not all) dispensaries also carried the lower grade stuff which often had seeds. I'm sure people breed plants this way, and the male plants often still contain THC and are sometimes used to make hash and other types of concentrate.

Trichomycosis? Actually, I'm sure you probably mean the trichomes on the plant.

I think people generally get more allergies to pollen but that's because it's airborne by design.

People have the ability to be allergic to anything really, even themselves :V

What do you mean "when you touch it"?

Again, smoking it can cause bronchitis and the way you describe it with 'wheezing' sounds like bronchitis.

It's either an infection, or just inflammation which can be part of an allergic reaction.

You won't get bronchitis by eating things with THC in them.

Nothing will make you start wheezing by touching it though. That doesn't make any sense.

Yeah, what do you mean?  You get a skin reaction from just touching it too?

it's possible you don't get a reaction when you eat it because your stomach breaks down whatever it is you're allergic to.  Or maybe you got such a mild reaction that you didn't notice it.

By touch it, I literally mean touch it with my hands, or just handle it in some way.

It is strange... ever since this bronchitis thing happened from working on the farm, I have developed an allergy to marijuana, cherries, apricots, kiwis, bananas, etc. in which it will make my throat itch when ingesting these things. However, weed makes my throat itch, my nose run, and will give me abrasions if plant touches my skin for long...

Same here bud, but only with pot. Sorry man, I feel your pain.
