It's not the governments reactions really that would lead to it imo, it would be a coup/inner turmoil situation that creates enough confusion that an outside faction mounts an assault on a base with nuclear weapons and steals some. Or inside infiltration of said nuclear bases.

Two interesting videos, the first one is pure eyecandy. China's first nuclear test which was combined with a military exercise that featured, among things, soldiers on horseback brandishing swords. Can you imagine a starker contrast?




This next one is a cannon fired nuclear weapon with a power of 15 kilotons. This is about equivalent to the bomb on Hiroshima and is probably about the best terrorists can do with a DIY weapon. North Korea needed 3 tests to get a weapon half as powerful, their first was about 20 times less powerful.

I also think that that a nuclear weapon is less likely to be used than just a big stack of radioactive material surrounding an explosive that contaminates the shit out of a target for years.

Probably not. If I do it will be either Pakistan Nuking India, or North Korea Nuking South, which is probably unlikely, because somehow they have more troops at the border anyway.
Maybe Israel could get nuked. Could their defences intercept that?

I think that dead nuclear reactor sitting under the ocean in Japan spewing radioactivity is more of a concern at this point in time than nuclear warheads

I don't see nuclear war happening without everything going to utter shite. There's too many incentives against it.

any nuclear disasters we face -imo- will be unintentional ones.

lets not forget about the fact the NATO has shared nuclear weapons with 6 other countries . there you go 5 nations 6 bases 160~240 B61 nuclear weapons.

and lets not forget that the Saudis paid off Pakistan to buy a few of their nukes right off the shelf.

Lets also not forget that there is evidence that israel also has nuclear weapons.

So, lets see... if Nato Gives nuclear weapons to 5 countries, and pakistan gives nuclear weapons to Saudi Arabia, and Israel has a secret stash... and lets not forget that the Russians are moving south and west with their acquisitions of Crimea, Georgia, and has a military presence in Syria....

and the russians and the USA are making deals in Iran.......

Yeah, i think that shit will go pretty bad in my lifetime.

its only been 70 years since the first nuclear detonation, i don't think we'll make it another 70.

july 16th 1945 the US successfully tested the first nuclear weapon, it wasn't a month later, august 6th that we dropped it on hiroshima and nagasaki, and killed 125,000 people instantly.... A so called justifiable use because not using it would have cost many more lives.

with this sort of logic being somehow acceptable, in the event of international large scale warfare, how would the use of nuclear weapons (or something far far worse) be justifiable?

we aren't in the same world as the 2nd world war anymore. I'm pretty confident that we will only see large scale nuclear disaster in the event of accident, extremely successful terrorism or death cult religious leaders

we won't see the countries bombing each other
