Living with a Heroine Addict
    #22886977 -

okay so a few weeks ago I moved into this new apartment for school. The roommate seemed really cool and normal, had no idea he ever did dope or anything like that until he told me. So I talk to him about a week later and he tells me that he was heavily addicted to heroin before and told me that he was using for about 11 months and was only clean for one month. He said that he is still clean but I really don't believe him. I have a $1000 gaming computer and he's seen it before in my room. I showed it to him when I first moved in. Should I bring my computer back to my parents house? I really don't want this to get stolen and it worries me because of how serious of a drug heroin is. He said that he's always used his own money to get it and he does seem like a very self sufficient person but I still don't want to risk it. What would you do?

I would not risk living with a active heroin addict, in all honesty.
Heroin addiction will intensive for most people and that addict will steal every valuable thing you have, with no remorse.

Maybe talk to your roommate about him getting on opioid maintenance and if he has no will to change, it may get much worse. I'd find somewhere else to live, even back at your parents and explain the situation you are in.

Not every heroin addict steals but there are a lot that do. If you would be devastated without your PC than take it back to your parents. Especially if you plan on hosting any house partys.

It's a really quiet house, the guy goes to school during the day and comes home at night. He hasn't started using yet, we don't have any parties and there's a deadbolt lock on my door. Should I still be worried?

Not sure what the question is, should you be worried living with a heroin addict? Yes, yes you should.

Tonight an old friend of mine told me that she was staying in a car and freezing cold. I told her that she and her friend could stay here tonight. She turned down my offer and asked me for money instead. Turns out she's using heroin and was probably just trying to con me. No one can afford a heroin habit on their own unless they make a ton of money. My advice is to get out of there as soon as you can.

My ex girlfriend was a heroin addict and I didn't even do dope.

Horrible decision.

She treated me like shit and didn't even realize how the things she did effect me.

She literally went nuts and shaved her head.

She looked horrible.  It was insane

Then she overdosed and almost died while at her ex boyfriends house

Never.  Ever again.  I've lost over $1,000 to my friend who was a dealer/addict. Fucked over by my girlfriend. All over dope.

I was with her for like four months. It was terrible.
I met her when she was sober and she is a completely different person. Then her grandfather died and they were close and she started using again after being clean for over a year.  And the whole time I was trying to help her.

I kicked her out of my house and a month later she gets arrested forging checks.

Crazy times.

OP,    Does your roommate use needles?

If your roommate looks like he's still taking care of his hygene ,is working, doing his school work, and still owns all his own valuables. I wouldn't worry. Everybody hears the horror stories of heroin addiction but never hear about the functioning addicts who are just like everyone else.

You are obviously already worried, what you are really asking is whether you should act on those worries.

Yes.

That is true but the risk will always been there. Opioid addiction will get worse over time, some people can hide it better than others, for a period of time, but everyone will eventually crack such as due to tolerance or money issues.

Yeah pretty much. I can attest to that. I was a functioning addict for a long time. Was able to make it work because I lived rent free, worked at a job I could get high at, then spent all that money on drugs.

Luckily I got help before things got much deeper, but I witnessed the spiral in myself.

What's wrong with obsessing over heroines? I went through an Amelia earhart phase myself.

I supported myself and my gf while doing abiut 60 mg a day of oxycodone probablu 5 or 6 days of the week without stealing or doing more and more a day.  I did that for about 3 years for some reason never really went over 60 mg mark.  I didnt make a ton of money at the time but eventually I stopped using that stuff and started using kratom instead.  It definitley helped my bank account instead if living g paycheck to paycheck while on it I was able to save.

People act like anyone who touches the stuff turns into a thieving junkie. And in some cases that does happen.  But in no way does it happen to everyone who uses.  I know alot of former users who never stole, held down a steady job, and we're generally good people.  But I also know alot of people who used and have turned into thieving junkies.  Those people where kind of shady before they even used though.Regardless of what people say on here people can use responsibley.  I think most people with strong moral values and a good head on their shoulders can use opiates responsibley.

Having said all that since you don't really know this person I would definitley lock your valuables up.  User ot not he could be a thief.  Have you thought about putting a camera in your room? Perhaps a nanny cam type thing.  That way if anything does get stolen you have legal recourse against them.

with all due respect, you didn't sound like much of an addict.

And the camera is likely worthless. Who wants to take legal recourse after a junkie sold your shit. Take measure so your shit doesn't get stolen. Who the fuck cares if you can get this guy arrested after the fact?

Get renter's insurance, make sure it covers thefts.

Don't worry, be happy.

He said before that he used to shoot up, I know this because he said that his track marks were nearly gone. I really can't afford to move to another place because I'm in the middle of the semester right now. Do you think he could try to poison me without me knowing it? That way he could have someone pay for it?

I know that sounds crazy but heroin addicts generally are, and people like that make me paranoid as fuck.

I heard the guy leave earlier, went outside and saw him get in a nice ass car with two other people in the front seat that happened to be black or brown. So he could be very well using. Might have to get my valuables out of here next week besides tv and laptop.

You guys are honestly scaring the shit out of me with all of this.

Even with a lock on my door I really don't feel comfortable leaving valuables in here. Any lock can be picked in an under a minute.

I've known several people that loved to ride the Horse, including myself. All but two were fine, upstanding citizens who were more or less capable of monitoring their intake and never got into too much trouble, financial or legal. Sure, they may have needed some shady bailouts after spending their rent money on a party weekend, but they were always good about paying me back.

The two that did not fall into this category both had shady streaks before they started using. They definitely fit the burnout druggie/smooth talking con artist/shoplifter stereotype long before they got on the Horse. They were promptly banned from my residence after some (minor) items were clearly removed by them.

Overall, drugs are tools. Most people that use guns are fine, upstanding citizens that like to blow off some steam by perforating a paper zombie at the range. Some go the extra mile and perforate schoolchildren. I really don't think OP has much to worry about, unless the roommate is somewhat shady when sober. The fact that you made a point to show off your pride and joy computer will likely make him think twice about stealing it, and go instead for the textbook or minor electronic that you never made a big deal about. Even the dumbest criminals don't like getting caught, and will aim for something that is least noticeable. The two that were banned from my house never went for the biggest score they knew about. They took small things, like old and yet unsold phones. They realized that if they hauled off my computer, for example, that I'd go ballistic and probably kick some skulls in.
