My landlords trying to raise my rent is this fair?
    #22848126 -

So my landlord just figured out I was growing a few marijuana plants in my closet with a 720 watt LED.

He decided my room was filthy (it was actually worse from the last tentant when I moved in). He wrote a letter and left it by my door. It's addressed with a completely different last name on it then mine

He states because of the condition of the room and the increase in the electric bill the last 2 months rent will go up +200$/month if I continue to grow these 3 plants with a low energy LED.

 mannnn I don't even own a TV and am barely home. I take showers once every 4-5 days(I know gross) and I feel like I must barely use electricity besides the LED light which is also pretty energy efficient.

It's legal to grow up to 4 plants here so I'm not breaking any laws. Does this seem very fair?

720 watts is probably not what most people would consider "low energy." How much does a kilowatt-hour of electricity go for in your area?

Kinda sounds like he wants you to leave but doesn't want the hassle of evicting you.

We have a lease agreement setup. I will research the cost of electricity in my area. I'll read the lease.

I just don't think any of this would be happening if he checked the room after the last tenant occupied it. There was trash littering the floor, mold on the table tops. Random shit just everywhere, trash under the desk. I cleaned this room up so much, but because i never complained about it this is the outcome. He finally saw the room and blamed me for the furniture being dirty. However it looks 7x better than when I moved in. There's no mold, dirty dishes, there is just clutter, paper, books on the desks along with some weed crumbs

I feel like he doesn't like me living here, honestly and he is upset I never mentioned the pot plants. But it's legal here and I'm undert eh limit.

I am going to take down the plants though, I'll probably start looking for a new place. I am going to read the lease again.

Dude, if you're not in a legal state what he is really doing is extortion. You better get acquainted with paying more rent or move in a hurry if you don't want to Po Po knocking down your door. When he found those plants, you lost all of your power.

Edit: Just saw that you mentioned that it is a legal grow. Guess the guy just doesn't like the cut of your jib.

You signed a lease to certain agreements.

Until that lease is up, I don't think he can change that lease, legally.  Unless it's written that it's subject to change at his discretion at any time.

All you should have to do is pay the electric bill.

If your utilities are included in your rent.

You need to go through the last 6 months.  Get an average on what it was before you were growing.  Look at the last months that you have been growing.  And pay the difference that is higher than the average.

That's what I would do.

Thank god my landlords grow weed and a grow room came with our apartment.  I'd hate to have to deal with that shit.

Hope everything works out for you though.    :peace:

Thanks, I definitely will.

He has to show me the electricity, right? That's not rude at all. Seems he should have to show me what I am paying for.

My math could be way off, but even if your lights were running 24/7, a 750 watt appliance only costs something like 60-80 for a whole month. Given the fact that you are most not likely running it 24/7, that cost drops even further. Do the math yourself to make sure but that's what I came up, I'm kind of out of it at the moment though.

I'd definitely be looking through that lease thoroughly. Sounds to me like he's just trying to make it unaffordable/undesirable for you to live there and wants you gone.

It's on a 12/12 cycle for the last month, before that 18/6 ....when I first moved in I had TWO of these LED lights running for the first month.

He told me "the rent has been going up and up and up" ....I am going to check the electricity bill and offer him a deal. Slowly and politely and see where this goes. I'll read the lease and clean up the furniture as much as I can, then report back.

Also if I stop this grow I am going to make a point of being hygenic as possible and using as much electricity as I want within reasonable limit to prove a point it has nothing to do with the light.

The light probably adds max 40$ a month to the bill.

Its legal but do landlords have to allow you to grow? Smoking cigs is legal but banned in all sorts of rentals. Is there a rule you have to disclose plants to landlord? If its shared utilities he kind of has a point if you are sucking power, in future you should get a place with its own meter. Also he should have utility bills before you moved in to show you its gone up, most leases have a clause if consumption is a certain percent more than when previous tenant was there you need to pay more. Read that lease
