Shroomery untrusted?
    #22736393 -

Starting this afternoon, I haven't been able to get on The Shroomery using Firefox.  I'm using my phone right now.  It asks what I should do and I tell it to allow the site, but it still won't let me in.  Every other site works just fine.  It just isn't allowing The Shroomery.

Help!  Thanks!

Mines doing the same thing. If I disable the avast web shield it lets me in though. So for some reason my antivirus and firefox aren't playing well together.

Can you please click to expand the "Technical Details" on the error message, and post a screenshot of that information? Also, what version of Firefox are you using?

Good to know it's not just me, Stupendous.

Ythan, I'm running the latest version, which I think is 43.0.2?

That's weird, could you please right-click on the page, select "View Page Info", click the "Security" icon on the top, click the "View Certificate" button, and post a screenshot of the information which comes up? It should look like this:

I got this picture from the add exception field.  Couldn't get it from page info.

Okay, yeah that looks like a problem with Avast antivirus. I don't have much first-hand experience with that software but you may be able to add an exception somewhere for www.shroomery.org. Alternately you can go to your basic preferences and disable the option to "browse the Shroomery using a secure connection". You could also disable Avast and try a different antivirus app.

Okay.  It's weird because I haven't changed a thing.  I've been using Avast for a while now and never had this happen before today.  I just got past it by right clicking on the Avast logo in my hidden icons button on my computer.  I chose Avast Shields Control and then Disable for 10 minutes.  You can disable it longer than that, but I guess I'll just do it for 10 minutes when I want to use The Shroomery.

Yeah that's because we finally rolled out SSL as a default for the main site, it was due to a change on our end. I think if you update Avast to the latest version it will probably fix that SSL error.

Okay, I will check it out.  Hopefully they don't want money to update.  Thanks for your help Ythan!

Same thing happening here. When I switched to IE or Chrome it doesn't happen.
I'll see about updating Avast... . . . :peace:

It says I'm updated.  So the next update available, as far as I can see, means paying money, which I'd rather not do.  There's a section on my Avast called Exclusions, where you can choose for it not to protect you against certain sites.  I put two different Shroomery URLs in there and it saved it, but still blocks them.

Incidentally, I just came across a discussion about this on Reddit. So you guys are not alone. Have you tried downloading the latest version of Avast directly from their website, installing it, and rebooting? If you've done that and it's still not working, I'd honestly just uninstall Avast and go with Microsoft Security Essentials and try not to run sketchy executables. This isn't really something we can fix except to advise you to update your antivirus or disable SSL in your preferences.

They could always install a better os where they would not have to worry about crappy virus protection or viruses...

Heh, as someone running several Linux servers, I assure you that there are plenty of people trying to exploit the "more secure" OSes as well. You still have to keep up to date with security patches, download apps from trusted repositories, and run executables with the minimum required credentials, no matter what platform you're on. Windows 7+ is pretty good about security IMHO, but it won't stop end-users from installing malicious programs on their own PC if they really want to.

I reinstalled Avast from their homepage after also having the above problems and hearing your advice, and it fixed it.  Avast wanted to add some browser add-ons, I let it.  Everything works fine again for browsing the site and I'm still https with a green lock thingie.

I received a hard-drive over the holidays and am thinking about trying to put the Steam OS onto it and use the Linux kernel/desktop it runs on to do web browsing etc.  Not sure if that will work well or not though.

Sure, on a theoretical level its very possible to exploit some free systems, however since everyone is capable of viewing the code exploits are fixed pretty quickly upon being revealed unlike windows/macs where you are forced to rely upon the owners of your system to fix their black box for you.

That said on a practical level, viruses on GNU/Linux or on one of the various BSD unix operating systems are unheard of where with windows there are a multitude of hackers with Chinese IP addresses trying to exploit the ignorant masses with the exploits microsoft won't fix or even acknowledge.  Not to mention those microsoft freely reveals their back doors to.

Can you name any free operating systems with a non-trustworthy repo?  Anyways, its pretty easy to check md5sums and gpg signatures manually or even compile the programs yourself.

Edit:  On further thought, I did once encounter a virus in GNU/Linux, it managed to start itself in wine even!  However it didn't work...

Heh, I feel like you haven't ever administered a public Linux server. These are usually quite desirable to the black-hat community since they have trusted IPs and high-bandwidth internet connections. If you run something popular like Wordpress on a Linux box without a web application firewall, you'd better prepare to be pw0ned. It doesn't matter if the code is publicly-reviewed, 0-day exploits exist on every operating system and people take advantage of them immediately. You need to configure your setup to minimize the risk. That means you have to update your software regularly, run apps without root/admin privileges whenever possible, keep an eye on your file permissions, and be careful about what you install. It's not that I'm worried that the free repositories are going to be compromised. It's that sometimes software with bugs makes it through the review process anyway, so just because you got something from the official repository, there's no guarantee it's safe. It's not much different from downloading an app for Windows from the official site over SSL, and verifying the file's checksum. It's pretty much guaranteed to be what it says it is, but what it says it is might still have bugs. But honestly I think most people who end up with viruses install them intentionally. Windows these days has enough protection that you won't get one automatically dropped on your computer, unless you have it configured really wrong. People see something like "Star.Wars.The.Force.Awakens.1080p.BRRIP.YIFY.x264.mp4.exe" and they want to watch so they click through all the warnings until a rootkit is fully installed. From a technical perspective, I'm not really sure how to solve that problem. You could lock down peoples' systems and not give them any admin access, like most iOS and Android devices try to do, but that's not a solution I'll ever endorse because I like to have full access to the hardware I paid for. If I could figure out a proper fix I'd probably be a multi-millionaire.
