The Agrarian Man * 3
    #22629824 -

to cultivate the lands and live off them in a self-sustaining means; is this the new landscape in agriculture, to feed a receding economic concern of quality over quantity, speciality agrarian farms to develop the land, and hopefully enriching it, as a source of renewing and redeveloping land? perhaps this can have other long reaching effects?

here is a TED talk on the subject (somewhat) to get this conversation going.

discuss intelligently.

I ate some catfish today and almost threw up.

Fish can be awesome though.

Leviticus 11:9-11

9 These shall ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them shall ye eat.

10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you:

11 They shall be even an abomination unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, but ye shall have their carcases in abomination.

I recently started eating better and working out and I'll never go back. I always knew the darkness I was living in but never took the actions to step out of it til recently.

the darkness isn't even the least of anybody's worries (you should know that), but good that you're feeling better.

two fish & five loaves of bread feed's the lot.

Dude, eating well and working out changes lives.

I've recently been getting into foraging for wild food. It's pretty fun.

I'm also learning about food we eat here and there and it's pretty scary. I'm the furthest thing from a conspiracy theorist, but some of the things we don't know about food we eat is scary.

Recently read an article about canola oil and how it can be up to 5% trans fat according to a university(I think UF?) study - I was like WTF? (Disclaimer: have yet to fact check this, but it came from a decent source)

eattheweeds.com is the best for foraging.

I'd recommend checking it out. One of my goals is to be able to survive in the woods for a few days just eating what I can find.

Particularly liked the part about how water that flows into the farm leaves cleaner than it was when it got there.
Really highlights the ecological importance of marshes and wetlands.

Live at the edge of a reclaimed marshland.  Like to walk up the road and watch the birds on summer evenings.
The farmland in the surrounding area has been converted into lure crops for waterfowl, and the Canadian geese bulk up here before heading South for the winter.
It is really interesting to see how it transitions over the seasons.

The idea of such areas as functional farms is actually really compelling.

Looking to get a number of beehives set up out back in the coming year; aside from the benefits bees have just to the garden, they are great for broader pollination.

Do you mean like a Journal of things you can eat in the wild?

If you come to learn to identify even basic plants, you can supplement your groceries.

Reeeeeeaaaaalllly basics are stuff like Bidens alba, dollarweed, chickweed, etc.

Once you learn to identify them, you really don't need a journal.

Nice thing is, plants are like 100 times easier to identify than mushrooms.

yeah, but i'd rather just have it for "just-in-case" anything. survival and stuff.

and @SweetLeaf -- yeah, that sounds about right; that really excited me, actually, to hear of the water actually being cleaned out, and it seems to be a good way to add preventative measures to pollution of the ecosystem; and as a bonus, in this farm's case, no doubt. but imagine if we could generate a plan to invest something like that in another location, i mean, as big as we could go, i certainly don't see why it can't be looked at, prospectively, at least...like you are.

unfortunately Monsanto might have something the say when they want to steal your farm.

i grew up on a small fruit farm and we always did cover crops and soil replenishment/maintenance. just like we did the bushes cutting back completely every 7th row in the fall for better healthier produce. limited pesticide and fungicide as well.

miss having 50 types of things to eat on the homestead, due to family disintegration i moved far away. growing up i had little interest because it was all work no play but now that i am grown i wish i had that farm.

yeah well, agribusiness is a futile attainment, regardless, so might as well make a go of it, to supply the best you can offer, as long as you can stay afloat, but, you have slim pickins, i suppose, out there.

i propose a plan, in case global warming ever melts the ice caps...we build a giant hole somewhere in Canada, and drain all the water there. :paranoid:

yea they grow tons of stuff here but at the cost of insane amounts of water.

back home we had a nice well with wonderful water.

did pretty well between u-pick and farmers markets, but for someone with a family it was shit money, hell even single it was shit money.

i think the best idea would be to then flip the produce into processed goods, ie pies, jelly/jam, wine, ect ect. people will pay good money for stuff like that, rather then just bitch about why you can't match the local supermarket.

Just listened to the talk. Excellent stuff.

If something like that is goin to occur, we've got a LOT of minds to change. I can't  tell you how often I get crazy looks from people when I tell them they I forage for food. If it doesn't find in plastic from a grocery store, people don't understand that it's edible.  One time in class someone was claiming that she was obese because she didn't have the money to feed her family healthy food, because they were on food stamps. I later offered her personally to teach her how to find fresh food from the wild and the look on her face was  as if I had  three heads. And she said something like "yeah I guess for the end of the world or something". Lol

this is why we need bigger pools of fresh water, and more self-sustaining (and environmentally friendly) development, so we can invest more in small farms without subsidizing them; as long as they put out with demand, then they sustain themselves.

and yeah @metalfaith...it's obviously helpful, also if you're trying to make ends meet, and can legitimately forage.

making this work would take failure. sad to say, just what derivative of failure to success would be entailed, i don't know, so i cannot say for sure what the scoop is...that's why i made this thread.
