i guess look at a lot of pictures of them and get to know their characteristics. the first couple times i bought them they were labeled, but after that i got used to knowing what they look like.

There are some cacti that can be confused with San Pedro when you are fist learning to identify them. But after you've seen a lot of them there are easy to spot. I can positively identify San Pedro 99% of the time now when I drive past one at 50MPH.

You can go to http://images.google.com/ and enter Trichocereus Pachanoi, then spend 15 minutes looking at all the wonderful pics. Then if you'll see a Trich you will probably know it
You can show a picture in the Garden forum to have folks ID your cactus.
Trichocereus pachanoi is very common in the cactus business because it grows and seeds so well and provides a good stem for grafting. You have a good chance encountering one in commerce.

you identify pedros by how many ribs they have; by their needles, color; etc.
