Rewire Industrial Lamp Fixtures.
    #22463155 - 11/01/15 04:47 PM (8 years, 2 months ago)

I'm going to rewire a lamp fixture to work using standard house wall outlets.  I read that lighting uses 14 gauge wire which relates to <= 15amp circuits.  However I plan to not wire these lamps directly into the house's wiring, but to add a male plug to insert into a receptacle (wall outlet).  Now I hear receptacles take 12 gauge wire which relates to 20amps.  So which type of wire should I use for the lamp?  Or should I find out more to setup for 250v 660w which is what the lamp originally had.  the bulb it originally had was 300w.

The HOUSE wiring is typically 15amp or 20amp.  A LAMP is typically wired with lamp cord which is probably 18 gauge, good for 5 amps or so, and there are plugs that work on lamp cord.  A 100 watt bulb uses less than 1 amp.

Anyway, you can use lamp cord, but if you're making a DIY lamp you're taking overall responsibility for the design, connections, heat management, etc. Be careful

Oh, I re-read your post - If you are going to wire for a 250volt 600watt bulb, you can't use a typical 115 volt wall receptacle. You'll need access to a 230/250volt receptacle, a matching plug, and wire rated for that voltage. Cheap lamp cord won't do.  Better get you're electrician buddy to have a look when you're done.
