wiring 2 lamps with one cord
    #5457237 - 03/29/06 09:08 PM (17 years, 9 months ago)

I have 2 plastic lampholders (basically, lamp sockets) they are designed to be flush mounded overhead (think of a 'pull chain' light fixture, without the chain.

Anyway, I want to hook these two holders up with one lamp cord. The fixtures only have two screws on the back (one, silver, one brass).

DAMN MS PAINT wont open for me! FU M$!

well I was going to draw a pic, but F'ing M$. well do i need to hook up all the silvers to the lamp cord wire, and all the brass to the other, or do i connect the one side of the lamp cord to the brass, then connect the silver to the Other fixtures (insert color here) then the last color to the other lamp cord!

I think I'm talking about either wiring in series, or parallel. Sry I have not taken a physics class in years!

Could someone with some electrical experience help me out.

you want to wire them in series. you want to take the 'hot' wire from the cord which will probably be either black or red and and hook that up to the brass colored screw take the 'neutral' wire most likely white colored and hook that to the silver screw to make the wiring easier you should take a six inch "pig tail" and hook that up to the screws and make all the connections with wire nuts. to hook the lights up in series just jump from the brass screw of the first light to the brass screw of the second and then do the same for the silver screws. Good luck and stay safe make sure to switch off the power at the circuit breaker and check the wire with a tester you can get one for five bucks at your local hardware store

well, I'm going to mount them to a board, so I can move them up and down possibly inside a cabinet.
I've got the wire nuts.
Also, It is my understanding of your explanation that i need to just keep the silver with the silver, and the brass with the brass, when it comes to wiring. The brass is 'hot' and should be the black wire, and the only other wire should be with the silver.

How about if the plug has a fat prong (will only fit in the electric socket one way)? Is that the hot, or neutral wire?

also I actually want to make 4 of these on one plug. This may be too much, I would love your insight!
the ONLY thing i will using these recptacles for is 4 100W CFL
the receptacles are rated for 660W-600V.
and the bulbs only use 23W of energy
I think this means that only 92W(23Wx4) on the lamp cord. Am I correct? Or is this to many for the one cord?

Edited: for grammar & clarity

I would have gone parallel myself, but then I don't like wasting time trying to figure out which bulb is burned out. Almost all house wiring is done in parallel.

Definitely parallel.

Like this:
Code:

Lamp1 Lamp2
O---------0-------- wire1
O---------0-------- wire2
