But mntl, you've got a gem of a daughter  Cherish her. I wish I was as lucky as you and was old enough to start a family. I'd be out there at the mailbox crying my eyes out at 3 in the morning because that letter is so damn cute!

You're one lucky dude.

awwww your daughter is soooo cute!!

my nephew is awesome too.  On Xmas eve he ran around giving everyone hugs, over and over, and then he saw everyone shaking hands.  So he shook my hand, then he shook all the other guys hands too.  He's only 1 and a half years old, and is hilarious.  It's neat how kids learn.

My nephew (of two years) was eating his lunch a few days before christmas and my sister and I were talking in her kitchen - I don't quite remember what my sister said, but it prompted me to yell "Don't toy with me woman!" just as a joke-type thing.

A minute later when my sister goes over to the table to give Oli some more food he says, "Don'toy withme voman!" at the top of his lungs

Sure. cops around here tend not to mess with neighbors. They don't want to shit in there own back yard ya know? But the marked cars parked along the street make a great deterent to crime. I've sat on my front porch toking and the cop is across and one down from me. No prob.

Congratulations

Its very hard to raise good children, no matter what you try to do, often outside influences affect them more than their parents do..

Cherish it, and dont stop just because shes great right now  you always have to continue with the same kind of treatment, whether they're already perfect  or not.

My cousin's son is such a sweet heart, he always tells all of us that we're beautiful .. when we went to this wedding, we had all our nails done and hair done.. and he just said we looked so prettty -  i love that, hes like 7 and isnt all 'ew girly stuff" .. hes such a sweet heart.. he wanted to give his gifts to other children who didnt have any ... its so cute.

First let me thank everyone for their kind words. It is great to hear. It sounds like a lot of us have great kids or know some great kids.

I don't know how qualified I am to give advice but I'll try to tell you my basic philosophy.
Love and affection. She hears "I love you" countless times in one day. Hugs and kisses all the time. Especially after having to discipline her. As far as discipline goes I try to be firm and consistent. Never use "because I said so" I always try to explain why I am disciplining her in terms she can understand. I also ask for her input in her discipline. She often comes up with punishments that I think are too much. Always follow through with punishments. Never threaten anything you are not willing to follow through with. I believe in the saying that if you love your kids, don't make their lives too easy. Honesty, if they are old enough to ask they are old enough to get a straight answer. Respect them as a person. Respect their privacy. Let them know that your not perfect and sometimes make mistakes. But that the important thing is that you learn from mistakes and try your best to do better in the future. Their is always something to learn from every experience. I don't try to run a dictatorship over her, I treat her with respect and ask for her input on things.

Of course all of this is tempered with some protection from things. I don't shield her from all violence but from gory images. Explain why their is violence but that it is always better to try and find peaceful solutions.

So much of it for me is just intuition and a feeling for what is right in this situation. But always mindful that I am being consistent. If I make a mistake or am wrong on something I tell her and apologies where appropriate. If I hide things from her it basically gives her permission to hide things and be sneaky.

I do think it is ok to spank but never as a reaction or in anger. I haven't had to spank her in ages. I never have to count past two anymore. A three count equaled a swat on the bottom. I don't think she was ever physically hurt by a spanking, it always seemed more like it hurt her feelings. I don't know if that is good or bad but we always talk about it afterwards and I always make sure she knows that I love her even if I have to give her a spanking. A lot of the time it is sufficient to just let her know how badly it makes me feel when she does something wrong. Mostly I use positive reinforcement though. Telling her how proud I am when she does something good.Thanking her for things and showing appreciation.

I don't know but I think consistency is one of the most important things. The parents are the rock. The ones she can always count on for a straight answer. We try to talk about everything freely and honestly and judge from her what is to much or not enough.

Once you have a kid your life is not your own anymore. That doesn't mean bend of backwards for them all the time. You have to do good for yourself in order to do good for your kid.

I don't know man, it is so hard to put it down on paper. I guess it just comes down to love, honesty, respect, consistency, and patience.

what a great thread to read after coming back from the Christmas holidays! you're very lucky to have such a loving and wonderful daughter...i hope when i have a kid or kids they will be loving and understandable like your daughter is

it's quite weird...i've been hearing stories of my little nephew who's 3 years old having grudges against his grandma (my mom). My sister my nephew and my mom had went to the toy store and they were looking for toys to buy other children for Christmas. My nephew homed in onto a toy kitchen which he wanted...it was a pink BARBIE kitchen and obviously it wouldn't be accepted in the household by his father. My mom said that she'd get him the kitchen, but my sister said no...it's the wrong colour wrong make etc. So my nephew thought he was getting the kitchen but at last minute didn't cause of the reasons above. He was mad....and worse of all, he blamed my mom for it since she was the last one to say that she would get it for him. He ignored her and wouldn't share anything with her for the past 2weeks until my parents came over for Christmas to their place and they arrived with a big ass little tykes kitchen set.

is that normal? this question applies to anyone who has children...

Well we went to see The Return of the King the other day. Fuckin awsome movie by the way.  That night when she was going to bed she was a little scared. She said she kept seeing the faces of the bad guys. So we talked about the movie for a while and I told her to try and picture the handsom men that had killed the bad guys. She said she didn't think they were that handsom, so I asked what kind of man she thought was handsome. She said "I'm looking at him". Some times I wonder if she is smart enough to just be buttering me up or banking points for later. I mean how could I be so lucky? So of course I laid with her and tickled her back untill she fell asleep. She slept soundly all night.  :heartpump:

bo): I'm suprised he remembers who said what at the toy store and I think a couple of weeks is a long time for a 3yr old to hold a grudge. I think your mom should have just got it for him in the first place and if his dad is so against it let him be the one to tell his son he can't have it. Besides I think they have other kinds that aren't so gender bias. Anyway it seems weird for him to have such a good memory in this instance. This is where that honesty might have worked. If they would have explained to him that it is fine if he wants to cook but daddy if kinda funny about pink stuff and maybe we can wait untill we find a different one. I don't know but it sounds like all he heard was the no, without any explaination as to why. The "because I said so" thing.

I can't believe this was 8 years ago!!!!

Still a good girl but the teen years can be quite tough let me tell you! 15 now and showing all signs of the teenage brain (or lack of) are apparent. Luckily most of her angst is directed at her parents which of course is to be expected. Who else would kids cut their teeth on? I cant wait till she is 18-20 and we can communicate honestly again. She is definitely on her own path right now not to be influenced by anyone. At least that is what I've heard when trying to get some of her friends to straighten her out when needed. They say " She won't listen to me, she does whatever she wants" At least it isn't just me that she doesn't listen to. I guess these are the years when they spread wings and parents worry most.

when the going gets tough I try to remember that the universe always unfolds exactly as it should.
