aquarium coolers?- trying subaerigunosa - blue meanie help!!
    #2197690 - 12/23/03 01:45 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

im first time growing psilo subaerigunosa
i chose the spores before finding that it was virtually unheard of to grow this indoors.
so far i have 4 jars about 50% colonized with rhizomorphic growth (innoculated 2-3 weeks ago)
i plan to spawn it into a casing of jarrah woodchips and keep over moist perlite with regular misting and perhaps an aquarium bubbler
i was hoping someone could share experiences with keeping the grow chamber cool.... i was thinking either a designated bar fridge (my least favourite option) or an aquarium cooler used to chill tank water for certain fishies...
also is jarrah a suitable hard wood for woodlovers?
fingers crossed!!!!
please someone help i dont wanna have to get cubensis like every1 else:p
cheers, toix

There is a reason for the regularity of cubensis usage

jarrah, are you an aussie? my experience with the wood has been that it's an irratant and alergen, I have only had kiln dried specimins of the wood to work with so I'm not sure what the pitch content of a fresh cut piece would be nor have I seen it in the wild, if you have wild trees in your area try and find a grove with some dead specimines and look for evidence of fungal attack, some species of mushrooms also attack living trees but the dead ones are a suitable indicator. I have Cedar in my area, it's a soft wood that has an extremely high oil content and is almost impervious to rot or fungi, it takes about 25 years for it to decompose naturaly as oppose to 3-5 for most others in the area

jarrah should be fine for colonisation.allmost all woodchips sold in western australia(i'm guessing your in WA) are either jarrah,or a mix of jarrah, marri(redgum)and karri.
colonisation shouldn't be hard but fruiting may give you some huge headaches.
can you give some more info on the aquarium coolers, these sound like just what i need to keep my temps under control during summer.

basically i know there is a reason for "regularity of cubensis usage " but i just wanna know if i have a chance...
yep im aussie and i cant find maple and alder chips...but i will get a 40l bag from bunnings (redgum) but my mate just chipped a couple jarrahs....i think there is some pine mixed in but im gonna pick the jarrah out do u think that will be cool?

i went into the aquarium shop today and the dude said they dont stock them but the smallest they have is for a 425l aquarium and its
$1200 bucks so i smiled and walked out... i did see a smaller (125L) one advertised on the net for 200sumthing pounds sterling and im not down for that either:) [they use some superduper cooling technology]

im colonising on brf and verm with wicked (so far) success....

my plan for keeping the temps low for the cold loving woody dudes is a silver polystyrene terranium with freezer bricks under a placky tray with perlite and the casings on top... humidity supplied by bubbler is definately the go.... the pump is gonna sit outside the box tho
really the only extra effort is replacing freezer bricks and if it gets me fruit im prepared for the work...
i just need to know if i should go ahead with these and the cold enclosure or should i just chuck the colonised jars outside and wait (a long time) for winter...
thanks for the help guys ive got some experience with growing larger more plant like specimens;) not this wierdo fungus stuff

update: doing an experiment with an esky in my room..
ive sustained temperatures of 9-17 degrees c hoping that il be able to get it lower with a bit of fiddling...
will this be enough to start fruiting assuming correct humidity and woodchips ?

i belive that subs need near freezing temps to induce pinning.
blue meanie is the person you really need to talk too as he is somewhat the guru of subs.

Great idea, I never thought of using a fishtank cooler, the sort that keep
salt tanks cool ?

You have choosen the right wood lover to play with imo, as it doesnt seem as
fussy about temps as azures. And I got mine to pin indoors, but they stalled.
I wish you better luck, and keep us informed please

As its seems very simular to cyans, try to use a fruiting temp of 50-60?f
and a spawn run of 65-75?f. But hopefully bluemeainie can tell you more.

I dont belive it needs freezing, or even near freezing temps to fruit, so
don't cool it down too much

edited title...
doing another esky experiment over tonight/tomorrow.. so many questions!!!
dunno if i need to keep the temps that low 24/7 or just half the time... im looking at using high intensity leds for light (peak light wavelength emission of 470nm)
worst case is hook up a bar fridge or send away for cubes
i was also wondering... why do woodlovers need to be spawned to woodchips? is it just the nature of the species? i dont see why they need the wood where other shrooms cant live on brf their whole lives..
