Help me understand amnesia
    #2182947 - 12/16/03 05:15 PM (12 years, 11 months ago)

I was just talking with a co-worker about amnesia. She was telling me a story about a friend who had it.

He would tell her things like "some guy keeps calling me ?Ace? and saying that i?m his brother"(that?s his nickname).

How can you not remember your friends and family, but you can remember the English language, motor skills, etc.? These are all learned.

ripple check your pms.

learyfan- it may or may not have something to do with the parts of the brain affected by amnesia.

check this link learyfan. http://science.howstuffworks.com/question672.htm

amnesia doesn't work like they show on tv. you dont loose everything and then all of a sudden get it back when something triggers a memory.

Ok, what if I told you that you knew exactly what it felt to have amnesia before, but you forgot?

"How can you not remember your friends and family, but you can remember the English language, motor skills, etc.? These are all learned. "

There are different kinds of memory. There are episodes, and facts, and then there's muscle movements that are learned and all kinds of different things.

Oh, ok. I get it. Should have thought of that in the first place.

Different parts of brain means different things remembered and/or forgotten.

this reminds me of a situation my friend was in several years ago. he suffered a massive head injury and told me that for the first 24 hours or so his memory would just reset every 10 seconds and couldnt remember anything. sorry if i couldnt help, but it reminded me.

There are two different kinds of amnesia.

Retrograde amnesia- you can't remember anything that happened before the brain damage accured.

Antergrade amnesia-can't remember anything after the brain damage. You can't retain new information.

Its also possible to have both kinds of amnesia in which your memory is completly fucked. You can't remeber things from the past and you can't formulate new memory's. When I was working on my undergrad degree we studied a man like this. It was quite sad.

Ya. You can have retrograde amnesia (can't remember anything before the accident) or anterograde (cant remember anything after the accident). If you have retrograde you lose your long term memory stores. But if you lose your anterograde you lose the part of the brain or connections between that part and other parts that let you form new memories. People still have other types of memory intact. You can have unconscious memory for old experiences or for newly learned experiences. For example a researcher put a pin in his hand and shook hands with an alzheimers patient, then went to shake their hand on another occassion without the pin and they pulled their hand away. When the researcher asked why, they said "you might have a pin in it" though whenasked directly if he consciously remembered such an incident he said no.

heya, i had light amensia once.

background: building a porch cover, had 12X2X12 boards layed loose across the frame, frame got shook good and a board swung down and crashed into my head (have a tiny bald spot there now)

the best way to describe it (very light case i suspect) was i completely lost track of time, as in i could not tell you how long it had been since event X occured with X occuring AFTER the injury. i lost use of any extended vocabulary. i'd just couldn't think of the word i was looking for. i appeared to be very lazy but it was because i had no idea how long i had been sitting there and couldn't remember what i was supposed/planned to do next. i was very placid and not my usual excitable self.

i ahd no difficulty recalling names, faces, passwords, or anything committed to memory prior to the incident. the episode lasted about 1.5 weeks.

Why does that sound like an episode of Seinfeld to me?
