Acctually when I got tips as a cook my customers would either ask to see me at their table or just walk into the kitchen and shove the money in my chefs coat pocket. Though never had waitstaff tip me out.

Where are you getting this information from? Waitresses have a different minimum wage than the average Joe based on them getting tips. You gotta be a pretty crappy waitress not to make at least 10.00 per hour. Most make far more than that.


Yeah, but if their tips don't make up the difference to federal minimum wage, the employer has to. Yeah you're right, but not only waitresses at full service restaurants are tip based jobs.
Bet you didn't know carhops at sonic get paid the same minimum as most servers did you? Well, they do. They're expected to make tips.
I only know this because my girlfriend used to work there. I've never even seen a sonic carhop get tipped in my life.

There is this big poster at your work  that has to be posted prominently that says what they have to pay you and last I looked I did not see any mention That the employer has to reimburse the difference.

its law u get minimum wage, so if u don't get it, they have to pay you, otherwise i think there "might" be a thing on taxes where you can get a refund if u have it all documented from times u didn't get it

Like you said, any server who shows up to work should easily exceed minimum wage, but sometimes they don't, and federal law says every working person has to be paid $X.XX/hr (I think its 8.05 now, but not sure.) So on the rare occasion they aren't tipped enough to make that much, the employer has to cover the difference.

apparently no tipping is becoming a policy in many restaurants in order for the
employer to pay each worker a 'living wage' at around $15/hr, how are they doing
this? by adding in a 20% "administrative fee", also known as a forced gratuity
