Anyone knowledgable in microphones?
    #21558243 -

I am talking this kind just to clarify

This is actually the mic I am eying right now

Unless I find a better deal I think I may end up getting it

I am looking for a multi purpose mic I can record vocals and various instruments with.

I was looking into a condenser mic than came across tube mics and instantly new I should just pay the higher price for a quality mic.

Though "cheap" tube mics are a couple hundred dollars at least

If anyone has much experience with mics I would appreciate input

What is that?

A condenser mic? A ribbon mic?

If you're looking for a quality budget mic, look to Audio Technica.

Shure is also good.

I'm spoiled with a father who owns an Audio equipment distributor so lately I've been using Blue Microphones and Galaxy Audio.

I have definitely seen some blue mics around on the internet and they look pretty damn nice!

The mic in the pic is a tube condenser, I was actually looking at some audio technica. Almost went for one i saw on CL.

But A tube mic sounds like what I am looking for.

Shure is another one I was looking at but they are pretty expensive. The mic in the pic is 200$ new, and I found some on ebay for 100$ or less.

Has great reviews on the several sites I checked.

Of course I plan on looking around much more to try and find a better deal.

That is a damn good connect for equipment

Maybe you're already on it, but MusiciansFriend.com is currently having Mic sales. They're a reliable company and I have bought from them multiple times.

When I get some cash in the future, I'll be looking into some HEIL Microphones. They will be for my drum kit, but the mics are great for other instruments.

Heil mics are created by Bob Heil, who used to be a primary sound engineer for Greatful Dead and many other big names. He definitely knows his shit, resulting in some quality mics.

Those are cheap chinese made mics, they sound thin and not worth it. I've worked in a few music stores specifically in recording, PA and drums. aCaterpillar is right about audio technica, good mic for the money.
even a shure beta 58 would sound better. beta 57 is better for instruments. You don't want to use a condenser mic for super loud instruments like miking an electric guitar amp or horns.
I have a neumann TLM103 that is awesome but not worth it if you don't have a decent preamp.

I have no need to Mic a guitar amp, will be just for vocals and acoustics.

Pretty much any Mic I get for around 100$ is going to be a cheap Mic.

That one I had found used for 80$ though and it has good reviews.

I could always swap out some of the cheap parts if I felt it was good enough.

Thanks for the recommendations though, I will look them all up.

Last night I found an auction for a mxl genesis which is 600$~ Mic starting around 1/3rd the price.

Everything I have read about it sounds great. There's a YouTube video of someone using it for an entire drum set and it sounds fantastic. If the price doesn't sky rocket I will be hoping to score it.

I may just but a super cheap condenser like I was planning, then wait a month til I have more money for a couple hundred dollar one.

drum mics are usually different than mics you'd use for vocals.

I had a Shure SM58. Worked pretty good for vocals and guitar. I can't attest to the quality with other instruments but it was a pretty good buy. Not too expensive either at $100USD

^Drums

The videos I have seen of this for vocals/ stringed instruments all sounds great too.

^Acoustic guitar

^Even works good for electric guitar

Seems like a great all around mic.

Here are vocals from it:

Sounds great in pretty much every application I would want it for.

Now as long as I can score one for less than the 600$ new price

That Mic does seen pretty versatile, and At a fair price.

If the cheap genesis I am eying ends up costing to much I may look into one of those.

Tube mics seem pretty Damn versatile though.

The genesis has a built in high pass filter and -10 db switch.

Some tube mics I have looked at even have switchable polar patterns.

I'm not sure if tube always = condenser but...

I love condensers - the biggest draw back generally is that you wont be able to capture a high SPL source up too close, but they do have excellent sound, resolution, ambiance and everything :awesome: Some are even 'over-sensitive' to the point of capturing the sound of the rubber of peoples shoes sliding against a floor 150 feet away  This can be great, and annoying to deal with at times.

On average a good condenser will run you quite a bit more, and I would be semi-wary of cheaper ones, not to say there aren't good ones.

Treat them well though, and don't place -too- close to a powerful sound source :awesome:

Tube mics can be any kind, they are just mics that feature tube amplification from what I have read. Giving them a nice vintage tone.

I was reading about some of those over sensitive mics, pretty crazy stuff!

I definitely am wary of cheaper equipment, at the same time I would prefer to just spend 50-100, maybe up to 200$ if its worth it. Like the genesis I am eying.

If you're willing to go with used, there's always a plethora of things out there abandoned by once-musicians and out of habit recorders

audio gear is always excellent in this respect.

Sometimes can pick up 600$+ mics for in the 100~ or so range.

Right now I am looking at a 200$ tube mic for 80 used, then a nicer one for 150 used.

But the one I am really eying is a even nicer mxl mic that costs 600 new, and the one I am looking at is like new/ unused.

I just pray the price just sky rocket on the auction, if it stays around 200$ I may have to buy it.

The only new piece of gear I have bought was a 500$ tube amp awhile back, and an electric guitar before that. But I sold the guitar and bought a used custom

Had a cheap yamaha keyboard mi mama bought me years ago I sold then bought a used 80's roland synth

:jamming:

I love used gear, much of the best stuff isn't made any more.

Well the mxl genesis I was watching sold for 255, fucker outbid my max by like 10$

I am watching another one though that is actually cheaper, though it is used.

If that doesn't work out I am leaning towards a Audio 2000 Tube Condenser.

It is made in china I am sure but seems to still be some of the best bang for my buck.

Comes with ATM1104 Tube Condenser Microphone, Shock-Mount Adaptor, Power Supply & Control Box, 7-Pin XLR Shielded Microphone Cable, Windscreen, Microphone Carrying Pouch, and a Aluminum Case.

Has 9 different polar patterns:

The polar patterns, selected from the front panel of the power supply & control box, include three common patterns (omni-directional, cardioids, and figure-8) and six intermediate stages between each of the above three common patterns (three intermediate stages between the omni-directional pattern and the cardioids pattern; three intermediate stages between the cardioids pattern and the figure-8 pattern).
