Symptoms of nutrient deficiencies
    #2144807 - 11/29/03 04:06 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

Here is short list of macronutrients and signs of nutrient deficiency

Nitrogen (N) Nitrogen is one of the most widely used elements in plant nutrition. Nitrogen is used in the syntehsis of amino acids, and proteins and is a component of chlorphyll and enzymes. It promotes vegetative growth and as a result may delay maturity.
  • Deficiency: Stunted growth, with leaves turning yellow (chlorosis). Entire leaves become chlorotic starting with the the lower foliage.

  • Phosphorous (P): Phosphorous is found in proteins and nucleic acids and is critical in the energy transfer process (ADP + P <-->ATP). P is found to promote root proliferation and early plant crop maturity.
  • Deficiency: Leaves dark green and plant stunted (the deepening of color is caused by increased Nitrates in leaves). Yield is reduced. Purplish color, especially older leaves, or reddish purple color on some grasses.

  • Potassium (K): Sandy soils are sometimes deficient of Potassium as the ion is readily leached. K acts as catalyst for enzymatic reactions and is important for protein synthesis, translocation, storage of starch, and growth of meristems. This element is requried by most plants in large amounts.
Deficiency: Root system and stems become weak and prone to lodging; yield is reduced. Readily visible deficiency symptoms vary among species. Some plants show marginal burning of leaves, speckled or mottled leaves, and leaf curling. These symptoms occur in older leaves and spread upward. Potassium is removed by plants, but is also prone to fixation and leaching especially soils low in organic matter or from soilles growing media.

    Secondary Nutrients:

Calcium (Ca): Calcium is important in cell growth and division, cell wall formation, and nitrogen accumulation.
Deficiency: Plant tissue formation is incomplete. The terminal bud may cease to grow, leaving a blunt end. Visible clues are defective terminal bud development. The margins of young leaves may not form, resulting in strap leaves. Roots grow poorly and are short and thickened.

Magnesium (Mg): Magnesium is the central atom in the structure of chlorophyll molecule. It is also essential in the formation of fats and sugars.
Deficiency: First signs are in older leaves. Large amounts of potassium ions may interfere with its uptake due to ion antagonism. To prevent ion antagonism/competition between Mg and K a ration of K to Mg in the growth medium is about 3:1 to 4:1.

Sulfur (S): The unique flavors of certain vegetables such as onion and cabbage, as well as other cruciferous plants, are due to certain sulfur compounds. Sulfur is an ingredient in vitamins and amino acids.
Deficiency: The main symptom is chlorotic foliage. In addition, the stems of affects plants are weak. Sulfur is not usually added as a fertilizer element but is added indirectly when sulfate forms of other elements are applied. Sulfur is also available from air pollution

overfertilization symptoms are more general than specific. To determine what happens to plants with certain nutrients they would grow plants with all the necessary nutrients except one and see what happens without that one nutrient.

Overfertilization often results in burning and death.

Also a good resource; Overgrow GrowFAQ: Plant Abuse Chart and Photos by Nietzsche; nice pictures of various deficiencies.

also any one symptom can actually be do to 4 others.
Like Yellowing of leaves can mean nitrogene but it can also mean lack of iron.

overfeeding the plant nutrients to the point of death is like eating 100$ worth of mcdonalds.
