They were targetting out of date firefox browsers that were part of the Tor Browser Bundle (this would most likey work against TAILS releases containing the outdated version as well). Also, if you did manage to have an outdated version, the only way this would work on you is if you had NoScript off. Even in the most basic configuration NoScript blocks those forms of attacks.

Also, using the Tor Browser Bundle isn't the best way to take advantage of Tor's security. TBB does nothing to anonymize your DNS requests, etc.. And if your host system is compromised, then everything you do is compromised as well.

If you're going to acess the Darkweb, use TAILS. Sure it's Linux based, but it's quite easy to use. They even have a Windows XP Skin mode for it.

Sure the NSA has programs that scan internet traffic, analyze it, and flag various data. But frankly, that's a silly reason to not use TAILS, Tor, etc..

The NSA does this day in day out, can you imagine the terabytes of data they get? They don't have time to worry about you, or I looking up TAILS.

And, if you're that scared, just tunnel your connection through a proxy before you look up TAILS :shrug:

EDIT: Not to mention you're on the shroomery, frankly that's worse than simply looking up TAILS

I was thinking more of labelled as an extremist than tagged as one online, huge difference. In fact, I'm pretty sure if you've ever read anything about tor online you're already flagged. That, ironically is a good reason to start using it.

My post was more relevant to the fact that their policies are fucking bonkers right now and not about being afraid of having my name on a list so big that the efficacy of actual monitoring is highly questionable.

yeah, don't misinform people on this board about the implications of using this software.  or, just searching for it for that matter.  if they want to use tor.  fine.  but don't just say, "no" when someone asks if they might get flagged for searching/visiting tor or other anonymizing software.

That's a good expanation.  thank you.  just as speculation though, they WERE targeting out of date versions.  what ARE they targeting NOW? i'm sure their techniques have evolved.

So Tor and this whole "Deep Web" shit totally sparked my interest, and I went to check out what I could find this morning.

So far it's just a bunch of conspiracy tards on bulletin boards like shroomery (no offense), and directories for rape porn and drugs in supposed "hidden" wiki directory lists.  Am I going deep enough, cap'n?

There is a lot of lore around the deep web from people who don't understand it.
All the deep web means is stuff that isn't publicly indexed. This means a private server is part of the deep web.

TOR is kind of different - it is a method of allowing a request to not be traced back to the originating computer unless of course the browser is compromised through buggy JS / the end user downloads a file that has a hidden executable in it / they give identifying information.
I am not going to explain in detail how TOR routing is done but there are many diagrams online. It's not that complicated.
Basically dumbed down each node only knows a step a head and behind for each request. Because the requests are encrypted the node cannot eavesdrop.
TOR based servers (eg: only accessible through TOR) are servers that only accept connections through TOR and have the .onion "TLD". They are accessible through gateways - nodes that know the location of that server and thus can route traffic to it.

The media loves the "deep web" as it's something they can write sensational stories about and people lap it up as it's involving a subject they  know little about (cryptography).
But it's not really that sensational or anything.
