I mean we are strategically bombing them, and training teams to take out their leadership. I wouldn't say nothing is being done really. Unless you mean to say kill them all by any means possible, as a military surge, and not just meander about with targeted assassinations and strategic bombings. In which case I agree, however can see why there is hesitation to scale up the war machine in the area given the circumstances of the last 13 years.

I think destroying them as a military force is wise and justified. I want to make that clear. However their existence is a lot more than an extremist religious movement. Groups like these exist because of policies we have used in the region for decades. While we do a lot of intervening, and not outright destroying, it's a lot more complicated than that - groups like these can't be permanently destroyed without others taking their place. It's a constant build up from pouring weapons into these areas and making warfare an everyday reality for decades on end - since the end of World War 2 really. Every reiteration of hostility is a more aggressive version of the last, with more and more direct goals of waging war on our satellite empire. While religion is a used as a justification by these groups to wage war and claim territory, it's a far cry to say that their misinterpretation of their religion is the cause of the conflicts in question to begin with.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that we don't obtain more enemies because they are misinterpreting their holy books. Rather they grow up with a deep seated hatred of the western empire pre-installed, and use their religion as a means to justify battle with it and to justify an already indoctrinated pursuit for power and autonomy.
