What is the difference between slavery 200 years ago, and a "job" now? * 3
    #20496114 -

Slavery 200 years ago: Work at a job in return for food/shelter, and a little bit of free time.

A "job" now: Work at a job in return for paper currency to buy food and shelter, and in the free time you have you are encouraged to spend more money.

When your job only pays enough to allow you to purchase things you need to live, you are not working for your own advancement, you are doing so out of necessity to survival. That is slavery.

The system hasn't changed, it's just been polished and sugar coated to pacify people and to give them the illusion of choice, which creates more obedient slaves.

Thoughts?

Ok, nice metaphor.  I am not someone's property.  I have never been whipped.  If I go somewhere nobody sends out hunters and dogs to bring me back to work.

I get to pick my job.  Is the world perfect?  Nope.  I'm only a slave to myself at least tho.

You can be homeless and still survive. It isn't fun though.

Like I said, it's been polished with the illusion of choice.

You can only choose your job based on the qualifications you have. Qualifications come from higher education or experience (which generally isn't a thing anymore. College degrees are necessary to be competitive in today's job market), which is only available to those who can afford it; or you have to go into massive amounts of debt, which you are then working to pay off.

You aren't getting whipped any more, but they learned a long time ago if you stop whipping people and give them the illusion of freedom, they won't rise up and try and stop you.

The difference, of course, is that you can quit your job, right?

No I am a pretty smart cookie naturally so I can bullshit my way into lots of jobs, and there's nobody in between me and my employers so it is all up to me what I get from them.  I've never felt as if I wasn't living my own life.  I have the same free will as you I just appreciate the time and place that I live in.

I mean, I have the fucking internets.  What kind of slave gets to go on the internet?  I can discuss ideas with whoever I want.  I can just work a tiny bit and sit around and smoke weed and watch whatever movies I want.  I can see how that is slavery but in my mind it doesn't begin to compare to the way developed and developing countries took advantage of slave labor 200 years ago.  I hate my jobs alot, but that is just a ridiculous comparison to the jobs I work.

You could quit working your slave job as well. You would get beaten and possibly even killed.

If you quit your job, you won't have any money and you will resort to spending your valuable time gathering resources to live, or you die. Either that or you will end up on a government funded program, which is simply another way of controlling the population. It's a way to generate votes in a specific direction towards candidates that won't take away your government money, so you are still a slave in the sense that you have to make an effort to keep the power structure in place that will continue allowing you to live. You also spend the money on things you need to live. Slavery is not limited to working. It is a lack of freedom. You don't have the freedom to fight against the system because you are dependent on it for your life.

Well, the internet is an interesting case because of the freedom of information it provides. Think it's a coincidence that they are attempting to censor the internet?

It might sound like a ridiculous comparison, but it really isn't that different. I'm mainly talking about people who live paycheck to paycheck. There are jobs out there that pay a lot of money and allow for a more affluent lifestyle, but the majority of people do not have that luxury, and if they do, they are generally under heaps and heaps of debt do to the encouragement of spending their currency on material things.

Slavery isn't limited to bodily enslavement, your mind can be enslaved too.

Yeah keeping people alive and disease free is certainly a devious way of controlling them.

I spend my money having a nice place to live, drinking beer, and smoking weed.  I have nice days where I can do whatever the fuck I want.  If I wanted to go be homeless or live in the woods I could.  I spend money on things I want because I am used to living a certain way and don't feel like changing.  That is not a bad life and I don't even have it that great by common standards.

If it is slaverly I don't mind it all that much. I've thought of leaving society and living with tribes but damn. Hot showers, sweet food, air conditioning, vehicles, virtually unlimited amounts of food, modern medicine.

Society is pretty fucking awesome if you think about it. There are downsides, don't get me wrong, but all the luxuries. Modern life kicks ass.

Well, that's fine and dandy, but the reason you are able to have that life is because of the exploitation of other human beings around the world. The reason you can afford everything that you can afford is due to the fact that other people pay for a portion of it. The reason you can go to Walmart and buy X item for 5$ is because along the line of extraction of the resources that created it to getting to the store, other people have paid a portion of the price through low wages, unregulated working conditions, etc. for you so that you can pay 5$ for it.

The system is simple; the more money you have, the more power/control/freedom you have.

Whether you like it or not, you are making someone else very, very rich. They are devaluing your precious time as a human (considering time is the only valuable resource we have) as well as billions of others around the world.

It's not about leaving society. It's about changing it so that every human being has the ability to direct the course of their own life.

Think about the things you listed; there are other human beings out there who don't get to experience these things. Like I said in the previous post, the only reason you get to experience these things is due to the cost that others have paid for you to be able to afford it at the prices you pay.

I disagree that our society is awesome. It's actually pretty sickening that all it takes to get us to stop caring about our fellow humans is a few creature comforts and all these other little distractions they wave in front of your face to stop you from asking questions and thinking about the problems our society creates.

And I'm not attacking you personally, the powers that be who control most of the money in the world are using you to generate more and more wealth for themselves. I'm attempting to shed light on this fact so that people will turn off the mind-numbing television, they will stop drinking the conscious-lowering alcohol, and get up off their couches and do something to change the problems we face.

I mean, humanity will cease to exist if we don't fix the problem with our climate and how we are living. If you consider yourself a good person, you should care about the future of our species and your offspring. It would be nice for them to get to have clean water and the ability to grow food that keeps them healthy.

My time is valuable to me.  I don't even think of my time in terms of money or anybody else's.  There are tons of terrible injustices in the world but also people have a way of getting through it and living their lives.  I would not sell my life to be a billionaire, and I would not say that my life is worth more than someone who makes $1/day.  It is what it is but it is a good thing to appreciate that there is nobody set on putting me to work against my will.

I get that advertising is insidious and that there is alot of exploitative labor practices in the world, but that doesn't mean I'm a slave.  If I had a great solution for social problems I would work towards it, but right now I'm focusing on my own happiness.  Again there is nobody there telling me what I need to do but myself.

moonsphere, that is just the mindset of the slave. everyone is a slave. they are a slave until they batter someone else over the head, and presumably the more merited and distinguished, and the more congruous and courteously, the better. then stroke stroke stroke their ego.

then you are not a slave, but then again, are you the best all the time?

when is one not a slave: when one is battering one
when one is negating another's will
when one is doing what they want

basically, you aren't as slave if you can say so.

do people try and control this frame of thought and mind?
yes.

Well I can't argue with that. The exploitation of the Chinese is messed up.

With GMOs (not the pesticide-ridden ones) food will become insanely cheap. We can design food with bigger yields and drought tolerance. World hunger won't last all that much longer.

Automation of factories will also help diminish the terrible factory conditions.

While others may disagree, I believe technology is the answer.

I understand what you are saying, but how can you be truly happy while other human beings are suffering? Is it true happiness or is it an egotistical form of the concept of happiness? ("My" happiness is of the utmost importance.)

I agree. Technology is great. However, technology in the hands of the corrupt really doesn't solve the problem.

The technology to change a lot of things has been around for a long time. The only reason we are still dependent on fossil fuels is because they are more profitable for those in power.

There is nothing wrong with a free market; however, when you have a free market and couple that with poor education of the population, the people are essentially forced to pay for whatever is the cheapest/most abundant. It is cheaper to pay for a gasoline powered car than it is to pay for an electric car. It is cheaper to heat your home with fossil fuels than it is to buy an entire solar panel setup.

It goes back to the illusion of choice. People think they have a choice, but the choice has already been made based on what they can afford. What they can afford is based on where the money goes. The money comes from the people who have it, who have one goal: Make more money, gain more control.

If you are asking how I can be happy, I don't know.  I just know that I can be happy, so why not.  I don't get into the semantics of it but I laugh and enjoy life more than I feel like I deserve, so I just count myself lucky and go with it.  I think I try to tell myself that it is all relative and everyone knows happiness on their own level.  Like I said some people would never be happy with my life, but I don't waste time questioning their notions.

If I was an actual slave, I imagine a fraction of the luxuries I have today would make me pretty happy.

Well.. It isn't really a free market, at least not here in the US. Politicians hand out subsidies to certain corporations.

Regulations are in place to stop new businesses from sprouting. Just look at the taxi industry lobbying to ban uber and lyft.

As for the energy crisis. It has been solved already.
