morphine cells isolated...

in a canadian university a study is on to find a gene responsable for specific alkaloids in teh opium poppy. they have resently found the cells responsable for the production of morphine and codiene. they say it woudl eb a exallent plant for the prairies as it woudl grow well and produce medacine, and make edible seeds.

it was on discovery chanel the program daily planet.

they also wanted to take away the gene for morphine and replace it with a gene that would make the poppy produce a different medicinal alkaloid. the purpose for this woudl be that farms in afganistan and india could keep growign poppys for a big profit just herion could not be produced.

never happen [at least not anytime soon]. the use and production opiates is far too deeply engrained in the culture, even if detrementaly.

it would be GM first of all so it could ruin good plants in canada

and it would only have codeine

well thats funny cause codeine turns back into morphine in the body anyway , codeines other name is something like methyl-morphine!

well they want to know how to make them More potent or less potent depending on ho they see fit. just want to fidn teh gene.

concretefeet. they want to geneticly engineer teh poppy to produce more but different akaloids that can be used in medicine. teh main reason countrys grow it is because it has big profit. (and soem are addicted yes). the crops are a function of profit. not much really can be grown in the soil poppys can.
