A temporary Survivalist lifestyle would be cool * 1

I always think about it. I wish I knew and understood so much more about how to survive out in nature. I see all these shows on TV, which I'm sure aren't totally "survivalist" Per Se, but it sparks the idea. To spend like, a week tops on your own, maybe with one other person just surviving off the land. Just to experience it, to live on the bare essentials and possibly grow a much broader appreciation for what you need rather than you want.

I would only do this if I was confident in my ability of course, which when it comes to knowing what's safe to eat, what isn't, what can kill me, what can't and so on, I have about zero knowledge. When it comes to the will to live, and improvising your way out of certain situations, I think I could excel. I guess that's why I'd love to try it, just to see what I am and what I am not capable of in my most vulnerable and desperate state. I suppose we all want to be pushed once in awhile, to understand ourselves, our strengths and our weaknesses.

I don't know, the idea popped in my head so I figured I'd post it. Has anyone else been interested in this? Or even possibly spent a few days living on just the necessities? It seems like it could be very transforming.

I spend a lot of time doing bushcraft, woodworking, fire making, foraging, shelter building and other basic survival stuff.

It is great and rewarding.

Never done it but want to. Best for outdoor hobbyists. Be ready to sleep alone outside.

Some buddies of mine are planning to walk the pacific crest trail. They've been getting all of their gear together and getting in shape for it for the last year. They're doing it next spring. They said it would take about 3-5 months. Sounds like a cool idea to me.

It would be more than cool, it would fucking amazing. I've always wanted to get away from society and live in the wilderness somewhere with a gf and just us two hunt for food and live like they did a million years ago. I don't know if I could pull it off alone for more than a year, I think I would go crazy from lack of companionship

I wouldn't say I live a survivalist lifestyle but I depend on the land for sure. I live in south Dakota which hits -30 to -40 sometimes plus windchill and I heat my house entirely with wood. No electric or gas heaters. I hunt and fish for most of the meat I eat. (got 90lb of deer between my tags last year, all butchered myself.) As far as veggies I hate gardening and buy that stuff. Of course I have to order parts but I fix all my vehicals myself and it never fails that atleast one of them breaks down in deep winter. Some of my buddies and I kayak down the river with our fishing poles and camp for a few days at a time. That's always a fun adventure. Most states have laws inplace to enable kayakers to camp along the high water mark and it beats parks anyday in my opinion. I'd like to do some winter camping this year also. I have never done it but my house can be pretty damn close to that some day in the winter...

I got sent to a wilderness program when I was 16. Big ass Samoans, hired by parents, came and kidnapped me in the middle of the night. Next thing I know I'm hundreds of miles deep in the mountains of Utah. We had to build our own personal shelter every night out of tarp and makeshift rope. If you couldn't use a bow drill set to create fire you had to eat cold hydrated beans and rice. We hiked 10-15 miles per day in the winter. It got below 10 degrees F at night so we had bad ass sleeping bags. Then at the end you have to go on a solo where your alone for 2 weeks. It was fucking crazy and I hated it at the time, but looking back it was a great experience. The whole thing was 3 1\2 months.

I hated the boyscouts while I was involved with it, but I am so glad that I went through it and learned a lot.

I spent a week in the middle of the Gila wilderness in New Mexico. I thought it would be a great opportunity to quit smoking, but it just made me not able to take a shit for six days until I got back to civilization and I pretty much destroyed the first toilet I came across.

THis really does sound awesome, you are very lucky to of experienced something like that

Waiting to do a 'minimal' camping / hiking trip soon and use some of the survival and bushcraft stuff I've picked up over the past couple years.

I tried. I dug little holes made little seats with logs, but nothing ever came out. I was the laughing stock of the expedition despite the fact that I was the only one who knew how to read a fucking map.
