Hunting in Jalisco, Mexico - 07/07/2014

A few years ago, I quit my job and moved to Lake Chapala, Mexico. Until this weekend, I had never ventured out during mushroom season. I found a variety of mushrooms yesterday and the day before, and I'll post those soon, after I check the spore prints and can include the needed info for ID'ing. Until then, here are just some shots from today.

Today's trip was to San Antonio Tlayacapán, which is on the north shore of Lake Chapala (5,010 feet), the largest lake in Mexico (some 12 kilometers across and 60 kilometers wide). It's in southwest Mexico in the state of Tequila (where, almost without exception, tequila must be distilled).

This was just an excursion for some "boring" field mushrooms, but it was a beautiful sunny, partly cloudy, mildly windy afternoon, like most summers here.

This lake has been inhabited by humans for, probably, several thousand years. Going several hundred years back, you can still find indigenous pottery shards, clay figures, clay flutes.

Farmers bring their cows through here daily along the lake before bringing them home for the night in fenced-in pastures nearby, so based on that tip, that's why I came here with some of my Mexican friends.

Growing on dung.

Same mushroom as #1. Noticeably light blue on the gills. I encountered some others later (photos below). My friends, of course, had walked right by our first mushroom, wondering if I had stopped to go to the bathroom! I'm taking a spore print of one of these mushrooms now.

This little guy was also growing out of dung. The edge of the cap was rimmed in darker brown, kinda like a tobacco sunburst job on a vintage guitar. You can see his friend popping out above him in the photo, and a couple drying up caps to the right.

I'm a total amateur, so I don't know, but this looks like panaeolus to me. I have spore prints going for these, too.

So that's it for the shots of boring (?) mushrooms. I'm uncertain what any of these are, and will do a more formal ID request with the necessary info later on, after I have spore prints. But hopefully you had fun seeing photos of this beautiful place!

You have Chlorophylum species (bluish green gills) Lots of mixed Panaeolus... Mostly Panaeolus papilionaceus, a few foenisecii, maybe a cinctulus or two... I don't know that any of those whitish ones are Copelandia, they seem to me to be Panaeolus antillarum. Next you've got Deconica coprophila, and an Oyster! (Pleurotus species). I don't know about the last two photos...
