Encrypted Filesystems

Does anyone have experience working with/setting up a system that utilizes an encrypted FS?

From what ive gathered it works kinda like encrypting and sending email would, on boot enter the password for the key, and it decrypts the data through loop devices. (instead of /dev/hda3, /dev/decrypt3 (IIRC it was actually something like /dev/aes-loop3)

If you encrypt all your FSs do you have to enter the password for each encrypted FS. If you share a encrypted partition with NFS does the machine local to the encrypted partition (server is encrypted, server decrypts then sends) or do the remote machines to the encrypted partition take care of the decrypting (sever is encrypted, localhost decrypts). Would you assume the setup is pretty much the same in FreeBSD and linux (Id like to switch to a linux (gentoo) server but refuse to learn ipchains or whichever it is for linux, IPFW (FreeBSD) kicks ass, although i really should learn linux firewalling =\ )

encrypted filesystems depend on user tokens, if you are the creator/owner of the encrypted files, than you get to open ciew change modify delede unless different permissions are set by the admin or root assuming you dont stay looged on as the admin/root. as for your question, the localhost decrypts using access tokens gained from the server, if it were otherwise the server load would be rediclios.

There are many encrypted filesystem projects. Most of them are non-portable across to freebsd, rubberhose is the only one that I know
that is portable, and its definately in development. loop-aes is
considered stable and is in common use.

The NFS scheme you mentioned is somewhat scarry, a loopback device accessing a non-system disk. Data-corruption will likely be a problem.

FreeBSD 5.x has built in encrypted disk support.
