making tunes in ableton
    #19926586 -

It's not likE I'm completely useless. I know how to use the software. used to be in FL but now on ableton. I have turned out a few tunes, nothing awesome but stuff I've been pretty pleased with

seriously how the fuck do people consistently turn out music. It does my head in. I start with a background, like some ambient noise, then make some bass line, then a drum pattern, then I hit a wall. every fucking time, so I have basically a 10 second loop and I can't go on from there. I've tried jamming on a keyboard but that doesn't work

what i've made sounds good to me, but I can't take it past 4 bars.

fuck my life

brb suicide

Try something new, or add a new element, or play with Arrangement, Ableton makes this easy.

Often times just some kind of new percussion loop or something like that to bring it to the next level or inspire some new part.

Play with an arpeggiator and a synth, and perhaps a delay unit. You can fake new parts out of existing parts with a Delay.

Also, take a break and listen to other music. Try to establish a chord progression/harmonic framework to your song, and see if that helps you. rearrange the chords, or play them out backwards.

I also once took a melodic element, pitched it down and stretched it WAY out for a very ott-like droney kind of sound.

I'm stuck with about ten projects atm, all at about 2-3min mark and I got nothing :crankey:

I just let them be and each time I go to the studio, I go through them and continue the one that sounds the most interesting at that moment. Idk I used to worry about unfinished stuff so much, now I just let them projects be. Good things come on slow I guess

Personally, I'd agree with ambient/dub techno being one of the hardest things out there to produce. Anyone can put together a few noise samples and a glitchy beat. Making it so that it becomes "alive and breathing" is a fucking PITA in my experience. Or maybe I'm just lazy. I have this one musician friend, though, whose music is the epitome of the phrase "simple is beautiful". This guy would have like 4x as many gigs as he already has, and he's quite busy as it is. I guess some people just don't need to polish their sounds(I'm super jelly about it).

Also, every ambient project I've ever started, has eventually turned into 148bpm-> trance, which is what I usually make anyway

maybe a lil OT, just thought I'd share since I know what you feel dude

It's okay, I tried too, and everything I did was cool for about 7 seconds, then everything turned to hell.

familiarize yourself with all the ins and outs, put in the work. then you can do a lot better at reproducing the music that is playing in your head, and bringing it out into tangible sounds...

if you have the creative spark and the music in your head, with patience and skill you can tweak the sounds to sound exactly how you want them to sound.

you see, my head thinks about melodies and beats and then i go about bringing that out into reality. thats how you produce the most memorable tracks. technical know-how is secondary to inner creative mojo.

whatever you do, don't visit my soundcloud page...you would only get frustrated at the level of my talent :tongue2:

Yea I always try to make music too and I end up with the same thing. A nice 4 bar part but then I have no idea where to transition from there.

You need to establish the skeletal frame of the song with atleast one element before you really try to continue. This might mean making an 8 bar loop of all instruments for vibe, and then sketching out the chords/bassline/drumloop for the whole song(which can ofcourse be changed at any time), and then just fill in the boxes basically.

Most successful electronic music producers are atleast somewhat trained, or very familiar with piano theory, and jam acoustically, or just on some little casio to get a large portion of their music written. Most successful rock/indie/whatever songwriters write the songs on acoustic guitar first. Dave Grohl, Ben Gibbard, thousands of other famous successful people go this route.

Spend some time with an instrument away from the computer, with no ulterior motive. I used to walk my dog 3 miles with my acoustic guitar every day, and go more done there in terms of music than I ever did infront of Ableton.

I can assist you in percussion loops/drum breaks/synth stuff/plugins if you'd like some insight or anything. Before I moved out here to Cali a month ago, me and Synth Ethics were colloborating on a few tracks, and they were badass. We were still hitting our stride a bit, but this just reminded me to contact him to get it going again.

keeping a track fresh requires you to become a student of the methods and techniques of the build up/break down type of workflow that you hear in high quality dubstep.

it doesn't happen overnight, you have to take notes. it's nothing too intricate it's just subtleties you pick up on after listening to a lot of real dubstep for years.

And to add to this, watch some Ableton tutorials if you dont already know the DAW IN AND OUT. You may find a feature you never even knew was possible that will inspire a new song element.

proper dubstep tunes are like a blueprint for evolved dub tactics dude...

listen to anything from SYSTEM, Deep Medi, Innamind, Tempa, Wheel & Deal labels to if you wanna learn about some dub tactics.

LOL

ok, here's the skinny... it's shit ton of work to pump out even shit electronic music...

1: get a badass microphone
2: get a badass anything else you might want to fiddle with
3: dig it

if you don't dig what you're making... then you're not making anything that's interesting. (obviously)

and if that's the case... you need to figure what kind of electronic "sounds" or "VSTs" you can use (or even better yet make yourself) to make the kinda "sound" you want. is bassy? is it ambient? is it linear? is it complex?

it's a shit ton of work to just go "here, computer, do it." you gotta program everything there is to do first. so your imagination is your only limit. good luck.

Been using Fruity Loops since 2009
I'm not a fan of Ableton at all, but it is most definitely the right DAW for some genres. Good Luck
