Ableton is probably the best for mixing.

Reason has the best instruments BY FAR and is really good for mastering

Fruity Loops is a pretty good all around program.

Logic is probably the best overall, do everything program.

I'd say your best bet is to use Ableton for recording and mixing and use reason for the instruments. Good thing about ableton is the rewire feature. You can use the instruments from Reason through Ableton!

i like coming up with 'live' ideas with ableton.  my best ideas have been more meditative than anything else...  i find it hard to make good beats on ableton...            def gonna check out reason.    that rewire feature sounds headyy
