Direct TV/HDTV? Worth getting?
    #1955204 -

I already have a HDTV ready tv, but no receiver. :frown:

I'm tired of staring at that wide screen and knowing it isn't living up to its full potential (I think this is the work of liberals ).

My only option for HDTV is Direct TV as my cable company doesn't offer it.

Can anyone relay their experiences with Direct TV (ie. customer support, hidden charges, picture quality, reliatibility, etc.).  Does anyone know where to go for the best deals?  Should I go with one of the big outfits I find on the internet or one of the smaller local companies?

Any help or advice anyone can give me asap would be greatly appreciated as I want to finalize this this (That sounds funny huh ) weekend.

Mucho gracias, mi amigos.

I have brighthouse cable (old time warner) and i have like 10 or so HD channels.  I would check the listing of channels that you get.  If you get like 2 HD channels, then it might not be worth it strictly for HD.  Also see if the PVR is avaible in HD for it.  I like watching football in HD.  You can see the blades of grass inbetween the players teeth

If your within brodcast range of a major market you'll prolly get more HD broadcasts then over cable or DTV.

DTV offers around 20 HD channels i believe.(not including any locals, which, i do not believe come down the stream as HD - could be wrong but i think youll need to drop in a HD antenna for that -- which is an easy for you to get HD channels for free - minus the cost of the antennae.) Most of the premium channels such as HBO, and Starz go HD after a certain time at night. Theres a few PPV HD as well.

You will need a DTV HD reciever to view HD channels at all, which can run a few dollars.

It looks great!

Well, I ended up going with Expert Satellite, an internet based company that subcontracts out the installation.

I got the Hughes HD Platinum receiver for $369, the Hughes TiVO DVR with dual tuner but only 35 hrs of record time (but that can be fixed)for $199, and then a regualar receiver for the other TV for free. Free install and triple LNB dish.

It will be installed on Thursday so I'll let you guys no how it turned out.
