UPnP NAS

I am looking for a UPnP NAS. I was going to buy a Western Digital MyCloud but they have horrible reviews. I might try to build one using a shuttle bare bones system or a Raspberry PI. I would prefer to use Twonky. Any suggestions.

The build-your-own route is hardly attractive with fully functional NAS systems being so cheap (for home-use environments at least). If you want a really good one, look into Synology. Their software trumps anything I've seen (again: for a home environment). Great integration with anything imaginable.

And, apparently Synology DS products will run Twonky as well (http://community.twonky.com/twonky/topics/right_twonky_server_version_for_ds214play). But I believe they come (or will soon) with their own upnp media streaming functionality.

You really think so?  I look into a home NAS everytime I upgrade and its always to expensive to be worthwhile.  They can generally only hold 2 or 4 harddrives and cost more than a computer!  Why not just get an old computer and put 4 harddrives in it?

Well, for most home users, 2 disks are usually plenty anyways. As to pricing; I suppose it depends on which things you're comparing and what your preferences are. A simple network-enabled harddrive (such as a simple WD or Seagate unit with a basic server) costs only slightly more than just a bare harddrive. Sure, functionality is limited, but for the cost of a hard drive, enclosure and a raspberry pi you buy an integrated product that you can set up in 5 minutes (or less). How much more time do you want to spend on mucking about, getting your sabnzbd+ to run and whatnot?

Of course, if you want some more functionality (and computing power), you enter the domain of the home NAS solutions like the Synology DS214, which indeed retails at something like $300 here (no disks included). But for that money, you basically get an Atom-based server with all the hardware required to hook up 2 disks to your network, not to mention better software than I could put together from whatever I can round up online - not to mention that again, the ready-made product is set up in a matter of minutes, while if you start with a rasp. pi or whathaveyou and you start configuring stuff yourself, you can easily spend hours, if not days, getting everything to work just the way you want it to.

In the end, it all comes down to how much you value your time, I suppose. I rather spend my time either being productive (work-wise) or relaxing instead of mucking about with getting some software to work that I only find mildly interesting to begin with. If it's your hobby, it's another story of course - I can understand that very well. But the days of messing about with FreeNAS on some scavenged pc hardware are behind me. It was fun, but I'm too impatient for that shit now. So I'd opt for the WD/Seagate/Synology option (depending on requirements) in a heartbeat.

So its a time saver, not a money saver.  That makes sense.  Most people could just keep their desktop computer on and add two hard disks to it though...  Thats what I always did when two (or four) hard disks was sufficient.

I am using my desktop right now, but I can't stream 24/192 FLAC audio over wifi. If I am downloading that also restricts the music streaming. I want something I can put in the other room with the music server and use an ethernet connection.

I was going to get a WD MyCloud but the reviews on that suck. I might get a Asus net top and load windows or linux with twonky.

The synology stuff looks interesting, I will look into those.
