What do you mean by “use”? Such as in the practical applications?

I think the concept of limits is mostly used in theoretical field then the practical one. Often in mathematical models or simulations. I have been involved within applied research for 5+ years and never needed to use limits myself. Math is the foundation which my research stands on and applied daily.

I always hated the mathematical proofs myself. It is so boring.

Well the limits are useful for studying behavior of functions in points where the function is not defined. That is the type of functions that go into the 0/0 solutions.

One of the typical book example is lim x->0  (sin x)/x = 1.
By observing that as x go towards 0 that is being smaller and smaller, the sin x is almost the same as x therefore sin x / x is approximately x/x and therefore approach 1 as x approaching 0.

No idea if the example was useful.:shrug:

Well you are probably right for the most of the people. However, it is good to understand math when working within bringing new theories or even in the applied science. Sins often you need to adjust the existing formulas or derive new ones based on the old once.

But what we definitively need is more ladies in this thread.:wink:

not really. i get what it is saying, but it doesn't help for the problem i'm having trouble with. however, i just stumbled across a YouTube video of the exact problem that i'm having problems with. things are looking up.

these are the types of problems i've been trying to wrap my head around. the teacher, unfortunately, uses the same example that's given in the text using only slightly less vague explanations so my notes combined with the textbook are next to useless.
