Dr. Szasz wasn't necessarily against medication, but rather the stigmatization of people claimed to have "mental illness". His point was that mental illness is a construct and that the system is ripe for abuse if we allow psychiatrists to label people incompetent, mentally ill, or abnormal. In his mind all types were valid, and "mental illness" was only a product of society trying to fit triangular, square, and hexagonal pegs into a round hole. The good doctor did good work and I agree with his philosophy to a large degree, but he continued to ignore many advances in neuropsychology and neuropsychiatry which did not fit his model.
If medicine helps you then that's great. Mild side effects are much better than wasting 5-10 years of your life depressed and floundering. One of my biggest regrets are not seeking help when I could have legitimately used it when I was younger.
OP, seek a diagnosis and if possible get a second opinion! If you are indigent there are probably community resources you can use to find a doctor.
