Privacy, security and Google search by image

In a time that is embossed with the use of high definition smartphones, why don't we worry more about the development of our society as there is google search by image, which is quite an easy way to obtain illicit information about people that we meet in public.

I'm quite paranoid about people on the tram who fumble around on their smartphones. I mean you don't point guns at people, but I'm sure that quite a lot of nasty people take pics of others and google them. Quick way to your facebook account imho.

What do you know, do you have any experiences about this? Is there a way to deny this practically?

BTW I'm quite flattered that "google search by image" hasn't got one single hit on the shroomery search function.

Have you used google search by image? All it does is match colors and objects basically.

although there is other more efficient ways to mine data

It's not facial recognition. If you take a pic of someone on the tram and try a google image search you will get a shit load of pics of random people on crowded buses, trams, hallways and similar.

What google images is good for is tracking down who that random hot chic you found on that net that does porn. It will match photos if they are posted and indexed elsewhere, that's about it.

"Search by image" isn't all that useful in its current state.  It uses some crazy algorithms for colour-matching patterns of an image and heavily relies on the meta data of an image.  It can tag some visually-obvious items such as buildings, flowers, faces, and cars from their visual makeup and include those text tags in its search. 

It would be good for stalking a friend or some chick you're creeping on (say you found their Facebook profile picture and wanted to find their Twitter and their Twitter profile picture happened to be the same photo) or you're looking for the source of a particular image; however, it's not going to be able to identify the same person in two different pictures (unless the backdrop, lighting, point of view, etc. were strikingly similar).  It doesn't even do well at finding same pictures of different sizes for some reason (which would seem quite simple by use of blending and ratio algorithms).  I've even saved pictures from the web and searched them with Google Image Search without a match of that picture.

I know the DoD and NSA have been working on facial-recognition software for quite some time.  There have been a few internships for entry-level positions on these, or like, teams for Computer Science majors at a lot of Universities in the area.  From what I can gather, it isn't going too well.

There are various privacy settings in Facebook. One of 'em is whether or not non-Friends can see your photos. You can also make some photo galleries public and others not.
