Anyone here into collecting coins?

Like coins that are old for at least a hundred years or so? I recently got into it.

Nah. I think I have some silver dollars but nothing 100 years old.

I was into coin collecting for  awhile there, and paper bills, namely U.S. currency older the better, picked up a sheet of 10 $2 bills too, some silver certificates, star notes the normal stuff.. haven't done much of any of it for a few years now.

I got into it at about 9 or 10, and when I was 14, someone stole about 80% of my collection, which was a lot. Hundreds, even thousands of dollars worth of coins and a few bills. After that I just didn't get back into it, had taken too long and too much work to put together what I had to want to redo it all.

I don't really have much left anymore.. I have an uncirculated Kennedy Half Dollar collection that has everything up til about year 2000 or so. I have my uncirculated Morgan Silver Dollar, think it's dated 1884. Few random foreign coins.

My original collection had a bunch of stuff from ~100 years ago. Wheat pennies were always my favorite coin to find in change and I had a ton of them. I once thought I managed to find a copper 1943 penny and about shit myself.. Turned out to be 1948 though.

I have an american nickel from 1899. Has a roman numeral V on the back/etc. It's not in the best shape, however.

Found some coins with a metal detector. Old Soviet kopeks, German Nazi era pennies with swastikas, 200-300 year old Czar coins. Pretty exciting to find some in the earth.

My grandfather left me his money collection when he died. I was impressed. It has every coin and most bills from 1960 to 2000. He even put a 1000$ bill in there. A few 100$ a few 50$ and many 10s and 20s.

I used to do a lot of coin sorting but haven't done much lately. I've only got a few coins that are older than 100 years, the coolest of which is a half sovereign from something like 1903.

I used to be into it. I have a friend who is obsessed with it.

Note that the AGE of the coin in itself does not dictate its value.

The value is set by the market of collectors, of course, so there is no one parameter, but the main ones would be scarcity, historical relevance, and also very importantly: the condition of the coin. A great quality coin can be worth tens of times as much as a worn one.

So you have a lot of Roman coins that you can get a pound of for next to nothing, and there are, for example, nazi-German coins from occupied territory specifically from 1945 that are quite valuable. The reason being we have a TON of those Roman coins, so although they might be  around 2000 years old, are too common to warrant any value.

Those German coins I mentioned are often valuable (in good quality), because of the short amount of time the Germans minted coins in the areas they occupied before they were liberated. Of course, they often saw the way things were going, and minting stopped REAL early, so the 1945 issues become rare.

Add to that the historical significance, and you see coins from '43 and '44 being worthless, and the nice ones from '45 are valuable.

So age is not the main indicator, that was my point.

If I was to get back into coins, I would pick one king, or one very specific limited amount of time, with historical relevancy, such as for example, Prussian coins from the Napoleonic wars, and just focus on that. That way, the numismatic research would inevitable also make me an expert on Prussia, and that period of time. It also narrows the search down a lot, so that I have a concise and meaningful collection, rather than just a chest filled with all sorts of random stuff.

My friend who is a hardcore collector, has a coin worth about 7000 USD (he doesn't have a lot of money, he just saves and saves and saves), and he knows who minted it, everything about the King at the time, he knows who owned the coin for several generations back, and I find that intriguing.

Nah,

I used to go metal detecting in my backyard, our area use to have a lot of native americans, so there was a lot of good shit back there... arrowheads and other stuff


But I gave that up, ill leave my ancestors old things alone

I don't collect them, but I always look at the year of old quarters when I get them to check to see if they are 1964 and earlier.  I have yet to find one in circulation.

I've never found a silver quarter in circulation either. Silver dimes are comparatively easy to find, if you buy a box ($250) of dimes you have a pretty good chance of finding one or two. Some people do half dollars too but it's not an option in Canada really.
