Share some insight on the heartbeat? * 1
    #18478681 -

I have started to really become aware of this pulsing circuit of breath and blood between the heart and brain stem. The way I breathe now is kind of timed with the heartbeat. There is a distinct pulsing of the heart and also a rhythmic waving of the membrane in the throat that alternates with the change of direction of the breath, this too creates a pulsing.

So we have the higher BPM pulse of the heart and the breath pulse. They are overlaid on each other and with certain timings/frequencies of each pulse rate we see that each time one side of the heart beats, fresh blood pours into the brain stem region.

From here I notice that the momentum of the heart beat is what generates the intensity of a thought. But it is the sum interaction between heart and breath pulse that decides whether a thought will sprout or by modulation of the breath, that it will cease.

Upon switching off thought for a little while it is then apparent that blood pulses up the main artery and into the brain. This blood carrying fresh oxygen, is the very blood which will BE the next (non)thought. Then the process of that thought expressing itself will decide the parameters for flow back to the heart, as vessels dilate and contract with emotion.

What can you say about the heart in meditation? The more I peer, the more I find that the heart is the seat of the Self. Namely those nerves/vessels connecting the heart through the brain-stem to the associated foundational parts of the brain are where human volition and self-hood arise.

I have been watching the air rush into my lungs, pulse through my heart, up the neck and into the core of the brain where it then radiates outwards in crazy fractal webs, just as imaging studies reveal.

The part specifically where I observe thought to originate is the central point on this picture where the brain "begins" and the brain stem ends. I have been watching the flow inside near the upper nasal passages and it does this really cool helical loop-de-loop on itself which I find really comes out during group mantra meditation.

Also notice the guitar string-like array of nerves below near the throat. Interesting stuff!

Any ideas, insights, directions to explore, questions, answers, I am tremendously grateful for. Please share your self :crazy2:

I think once I had opposite experience, where thought dictates the heart to beat more frequently.
I'm not sure if it was heart attack, but I remembered something bad from past and my heart started beating furiously. But my thoughts remained the same,
then I almost blacked out but remained conscious, and it was very subtle experience afterwards - I experienced state of no thinking.
Very interesting topic btw.

indeed

id agree that the breath, heartbeat & thought activity do have some relationships with each other

've noticed that generally when thinking slows the heartbeat & breathe slow down aswell, and vice versa, although its not always the case

during the peak of the highest dose of mushrooms i've taken i felt like i was dying and when i checked i couldn't find a pulse, as i felt like i was dying i was panicking, definitely thinking a lot, but had no thumping heartbeat, i can't recall my breathing pattern at the time tho

the heartbeat or breath can be a good objects to meditate on if you feel like you need something to concentrate on, i feel like they are good because they are subtle and mostly effortless and when your concentrating on something subtle, constant & effortless your attention/position of seeing is already more seated within what is all the time/beyond time, beyond effort, awareness, the heart of everything

the way i see it is the physical heart is an amazing organ with many undiscovered functions that are worth researching but the spiritual heart is the true seat of the Self, the very core of our existence

the word heart i feel implies centre, the source, the preceding truth, like 'coming from your heart' is coming from your centre, from your true place which is in you all the time, 'give it heart' is to give it your all, everything, 'get to the heart of the matter' is getting to the cause, the original source

to realize our non-physical Heart is to get to the heart of all matter
i feel that would be the best use of the heartbeat, to realize the Heart of all beats

take the pulse of the universe

Your heart has it's own little brain.

Quote:
After extensive research, Armour (1994) introduced the concept of
functional ‘heart brain’. His work revealed that the heart has a complex intrinsic
nervous system that is sufficiently sophisticated to qualify as a ‘little brain’ in its
own right. The heart’s brain is an intricate network of several types of neurons,
neurotransmitters, proteins and support cells similar to those found in the brain
proper. Its elaborate circuitry enables it to act independently of the cranial brain –
to learn, remember, and even feel and sense. The heart’s nervous system
contains around 40,000 neurons, called sensory neurites (Armour, 1991).
Information from the heart - including feeling sensations - is sent to the brain
through several afferents. These afferent nerve pathways enter the brain at the
area of the medulla, and cascade up into the higher centres of the brain, where
they may influence perception, decision making and other cognitive processes
(Armour, 2004).

I believe our nervous systems are conscious, or connected to your subconscious at least.

ramana maharshi says the heart/self has no location.  ... everything is the self!

he recommends to meditate on the feeling of "heart" though. maybe you could get serious with that
