Stanley Cup Finals Original Six Bruins Blackhawks

The Finals needs it's own thread. There's going to be more attention to this series with big TV markets in traditional hockey cities. We can expect Bobby Orr and both Espositos to show up. The Blackhawks have home ice advantage with the best record for the entire season and the Bruins have an eleven foot tall captain
      Both teams protect their goal with all their skaters. This should be great.

The projections by the National Media, which is mainly Eastern seems to be coming to a consensus of Bruins in 7 games. The sports books, on the other hand view the Blackhawks as slight favorites.

      Both teams reached the finals by similar paths. They each won two easy series, and each won one of these series against a highly regarded recent champion.
The Bruins and Blackhawks also were each critically tested in one series and were nearly eliminated in Toronto vs Boston and Detroit vs Chicago.

    Boston is regarded as more physical and the Hawks may have more skilled scorers.  Both goaltenders are relatively new but have performed well in this postseason. Both teams play strong team defense. They each have forwards that have shut down star forwards on the opposition. Each team has been weak on the power play but very effective at penalty killing.

    If this is going to be the classic championship matchup that's anticipated, it will have to go 6 or 7 games.

Anyone watching this? Game 1 has been intense as fuck.

That little french midget on Boston has been pissing me off.



Boston seems like a mean, big, and tough team (aside from the midget) I want Chicago to win but like i said the bruins seem fucking tough.

Ya it went from excitement to holy shit.... end this fucking game already :lolsy: I bet it goes to penalties.

So whats the deal with the guy that stands infront of the goalie? Do they jsut put the smallest guy infront of him to block his vision or something? ive seen a few teams do this the Habs have some midget like the brooooons that does the same thing.

Yeah. Afew years ago sean Avery got a lot of shit because he didn't even bother to look at the play and just was face to face with the goalie doing jumping jacks and shit, the refs couldn't do anything because it wasn't technically against the rules and I think the goalie punched him.

Nah not in the playoffs. I couldn't remember if they do it after 2 OTs but that's only regular season I think. The guys gotta be so fucking gassed out by now.

You can't tell toughness by size, but usually the guy who tries to stand in front of the net is a big guy. This is because the defending team will constantly try to knock him down or push him away. In the pre-Gretsky era the single season goal scoring record was set by Boston's Phil Esposito with 76. He did it by parking his big butt in front of the net. He had goals on rebounds and deflections and most of them came from a few feet away. He also screened the goalie when his team mates were shooting. They called them "garbage goals" but it was an effective tactic and Boston won two Stanley Cups. In the 80's Big Al Secord used this tactic for the Hawks, and when they won 3 years ago Dustin Byfuglian played this role.
    I was wrong about my prediction that Esposito would show up for games in Boston. He is now saying "screw Chicago and Boston" because they both traded him and he is still pissed.

Wow! What a game. We got pounded by thunderstorms all afternoon in the Chicago area, and then the Bruins started up right away, haha. Was not looking like a good night. Marchand is really quite the pain in the ass, but I can't say much, since the Hawks have Shaw doing the same things. Fun to have on your team, but irritating to see it when it's against your team.
Can only hope that game is a harbinger of what's to come in this series. Hard to be mad if the Hawks lose if the games are like that, it's just so much fun.
I'm not usually a fan of the two day breaks between games, especially now because I have Friday night off but have to work Saturday night. But they need it. Dayumn.
Lol Phil Esposito. I listen to the Puck Podcast, and they occasionally tell a story about him claiming to have been in an 8 game series. I think it was a Canada-Red Army series.

Game one was an epic battle. Either team could have won. The reason these two teams are in the finals is because they are the two best defensive teams in hockey. The goaltenders kept it going by stopping just about every thing. Rask had 59 saves and Crawford had 51. Those two had the best save percentages going into the series and they both got better. One of these two goalies is the best bet to win the Conn Symthe.
    It looked like Boston had it won when they scored the power play goal to go up 3-1 early in the 3rd period. But once Chicago started getting some momentum, the crowd was on their feet, and I think that made the difference. The Hawks really got inspired after that.
    After the overtimes dragged on it was incredible how the worlds fastest sport slowed down to half speed. One of the Boston players had over 60 minutes of ice time.
    Their saying Horton is still day to day. He skated today in practice. It's a big deal because his plus/minus for the playoffs was ridiculously good, on their top line. This could change at any time, but I keep being amazed that it's the guys on the other team that keep getting injured. The Hawks are supposed to be the smaller finesse team that controls the puck and then gets their heads bashed in. Shaw and Marchand is meeting all expectations as the battle of the pricks.
    I know one thing. If Chicago can win game two, I would bet a lot of money on Boston in game three at home.

Bruins Win
I guess it was exciting because it went to overtime again, but not so much. In the first period, the Hawks dominated completely but they only got one goal. The Hawks were pretty good for about 10 more minutes, but after that the Bruins controlled the game. They outhit the Hawks by a wide margin, but they only got one goal to tie in regulation. The Hawks powerplay continues to be the worst thing on earth.
    In overtime the Bruins were getting a good scoring chance every 20 seconds or so. Surprised it went so long. The goalies were both great again; one of them will get the MVP.
    After 30 minutes the Hawks showed very little energy, and they will have to look a lot better in Boston, or they will come home down 3 games to 1.

I missed it due to work. I recorded it and prayed to the hockey gods that I could get through the shift without the score being blown, but I should have known better. Every now and then I can manage to avoid hearing it about a regular season game, but all the fans are out of the woodwork now, so no such luck. I'll watch it tonight though. Too bad to lose home ice, that sucks. Hawks have a habit under Q of falling flat during games, so your description doesn't surprise me.

Kompon got fired by the Kings last year after winning the cup, and I have to imagine he will be fired this year. That speaks volumes, a coach being fired after winning a cup and again after going to the finals, win or not. I'm sure it's not all his fault, but coaches need to figure out how to work with the players they have. Leddy is about the only one that can gain entry into the zone well on the PP, and then there's no one to help him. Or when Kane is freelancing in the zone, everyone else is just kinda standing around. They may as well just have the guys back near the line slapping it on goal every time and hope for rebounds, as they simply cannot set  up a play to save their lives. Though Rask is good with rebound control, and tends to send them out to the corners, where the Hawks can't ever recover the puck. It's hilarious watching them, they had a 5-3 in... the first game? And it was Hossa-Keith playing catch near the blue line. Did they even get a shot on goal in their 3 PPs yesterday?

And Q is back on his line juggling craze. Why split up the lines so much so quickly? You're tied 1-1, it's not as though they were dominated and there's a pressing need for a change. He seems to want to outsmart everyone, but it bites him in the ass. You have the offensively inept Frolik on the first line with Toews and Kruger. Kruger doesn't do a whole lot either, and Toews has struggled mightily to contribute offensively. What could possibly come from that line? Kane and Toews did well together when they played on the same line, so why was it broken up? I don't understand it.
Bolland needs to be benched, he has been awful and is taking some horrible penalties.
This is what has worried Hawks fans all year long, that teams can just abuse them and take penalties with no worry, as the Hawks will not make them pay for it.
Game 4 or bust, no way they win 3 straight against this team.
