    #18377130 -

i dont understand it, although i know they extract different stuff, can someone explain it?

My chemistry is rusty but here's a simplified explanation. Think of how oil and water don't mix. Water is polar and oil is non-polar. Alcohol is somewhere in between those two, it's polar but less so than water. A polar molecule has poles, basically some areas are charged negatively and some are charged positively. A non-polar molecule has more of a uniform surface elecrically speaking if you will. With alkaloids, often they will be water soluble at an acid pH (when they're in salt form) but oil-soluble at a basic pH (when they exist as a free base.) A soap is a salt of a fatty acid, it has a polar end that "likes" water and a long non-polar chain that "likes" oil.

see this gets a bit confusing

i always thought alcohol was non-polar hence useing it in weed extractions

and alcohol dosnt freeze, but is polar?

No dude. Alcohol is polar... its because of decarboxylation(sp?) that alcohol dissolves the THC/CBD molecules. The more alcohol molecules the better.

so alcohol strips the a off of thc-a, but water dosnt?

Yup. It dissolves it completely unlike water and strips it making it usable by the body.

IMO using high proof alcohol (95%+) is one of the best ways to extract THC/CBD

All substances have a freezing point.

Molecules are made of atoms. Atoms are made of protons, neutrons and electrons. The electrons form a relatively large cloud that surrounds the relatively small nucleus, where the protons and neutrons are tightly held together by strong and weak nuclear forces.

The electrons in an atom are orbiting the nucleus like a planet orbits the sun. The electromagnetic forces within the atom keep the electrons orbiting the nucleus in the shape of a sphere.

Electrons are the part of the atom that allows the atom to bond with other atoms, forming molecules. In terms of bonding, the most important part of the electron cloud is the outer shell. Those atoms are called the valence electrons.

Each element on the periodic table has a certain number of protons, and so a certain number of electrons. Electrons are drawn to protons, so the more protons an atom has the more electrons will orbit it.

When a bond is formed between two atoms, the electrons change their orbits. The orbit of an electron between two or more atoms is not spherical as it is for a single atom. Depending on the number of atoms being bonded and the relative strength of the positively charged nuclei determine the shape of the orbit.

For relatively simple molecules, the shape of the orbit of the electrons is easy to predict. Every chem. 101 student is required to learn those basic shapes. The more complex molecules, however, can have some really convoluted shapes with pieces of the electron cloud protruding out in every which way.

It is the shape of those electron clouds that determines whether the molecule is polar or nonpolar. Some molecules have all of their electrons bunched up on one side, while others have them spread relatively evenly throughout the atom.

This means that every molecule is on a sliding scale between completely nonpolar and extremely polar. Some substances, like water, are very polar; others, like carbon dioxide, are completely nonpolar; and some substances, like isopropyl alcohol, are somewhere in the middle.

soap is both polar and non polar that's why its so good at cleaning everything

These two videos should give you the answer.

If you need to refresh how to detect if the molecule itself is polar or non polar these two videos should explain it.

And there are numerous other videos on youtube that give various explanations.
