Who has seen this? It is about an Indian religious skeptic who basically acts like a guru, makes a lot up about him/spirituality, and attains a huge spiritual following in Arizona. It basically shows the prevalence of blind faith/following, and the presence of bullshit in every religion/spiritual group.
I witnessed a lot of this blind following in Rishikesh, India where a lot of 20something year old Westerners try to buy spirituality or "out-spiritual" each other. They "understood it, man" after paying 4 times the price to listen to a guru no more legit than Kumare.

Anyway, if you haven't seen this I highly suggest it

Just caught it on Netflix yesterday. I think it is more remarkable that this probably happens a lot and they just never fess up to being a fraud. He took it to a comical level with the voice and shit.

I watched it and found it amusing he wasn't offering promises of anything at all. He was just someone for people to submit to and do the whole guru thing with. His teachings were just strings of spiritual sounding words and turning his followers back to themselves, eg "You are the guru, find your own path" etc. Throw in a couple of visualization meditations and all of a sudden he's got people bowing down to him. Basically there was no content to anything he was doing or saying, it was just a role he was playing that people could play the follower role to.

I thought Kumare was incredible.  I'm a yoga instructor and I recommend this to all my yogi friends.  It's a really great tool for grounding, and not getting swept away by the charisma and mystery of a foreign or eccentric "guru."

An important film, a cautionary tale for those who would put spiritual teachers or those claiming to be on a pedestal. To his credit he did keep saying you are your own guru I'm just a simple man, some listened some didn't. It shows how gullible people can be, it was both funny and tragic.

I'll have to check it out. Sounds interesting. Maybe he's actually filling a valuable role for these people. Some people just need to submit their ego. It doesn't really matter who they submit it to.
