My graffix card is packing up
    #17873402 -

Everything on my screen is ghosting and I can no longer set my resolution correctly, I have to have black space at the right edge of the screen so that things are in focus. I suspect that this is the graphics card but I could be wrong.

Can anyone tell me if this is definitely my graphics card, and if so what is a good one that I can replace it with that isn't going to be too good for the rest of my rig?

These are my specs:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+
2048 RAM
GeForce Nvidia 8600 GTS 256MB

I know my computer is old but I don't really want to do an entire upgrade. Would anyone be kind and knowledgable enough to point my in the direction of cost effective upgrades so that I can at least have proper resolution settings again? And maybe play better games too.

Hook up another monitor to see if that makes any difference. Also reinstall/update the graphics drivers to exclude the possibility of a driver issue.

What he said ^ first guess is a monitor/cable issue based on what you describe, or drivers.
Test the cable on a different port on the card as well, or test a different cable if you have one.
Reseat the card as well, or if problem persists test card in another system or test another video card.

Thanks for the advice guys, i'm working through it.

One thing that i've noticed is that switching the cable to different ports on the GPU has varying results; sometimes one port is better, another day the other port is better. Today one port doesn't appear to be working, but one is working without ghosting for the moment.

That sounds like you've either got a flaky cable/bad pin or possibly an issue with the GPU.. the fact that it's intermittent seems to point more towards a connection issue

If you jiggle the cable a little, does it get worse/better? Also try testing the cable on each port on the card several times to be sure. If it's only happening on one port every time and not the other it's that port. If it's happening intermittently on both ports, most likely it's either the cable or monitor.

maybe try testing the s-video port if that's a possibility, maybe you have a tv that has that port  (i think 8000 series were dual dvi and s-video)

Everything is better than it was the last time.  I'm good.

If we could look into each others hearts, and understand the unique challenges each of us faces, I think we would treat each other much more gently, with more love, patience, tolerance, and care.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

I guess if you do need a good card that would both replace this card if its focked and be a general improvement that won't be too good for your rig there are tons of cards out there that don't cost very much.

9800GTX maybe, there are a lot of choices, if you want to use what you got for a while and have pretty nice graphics for games there are tons of inexpensive choices out there for that, just check a microcenter ad, or buy something like 1gb of DDR3 and that should be just fine.
