I do a lot of intensive video editing and am looking to upgrade my computer. Right now im running WinXP with 2.4GHZ, 1gb ram and a Radeon 9200 video card i believe (not on my cpu right now). I was thinking about just adding another gig of ram in there, is it worth updated the video card at all? I dont really want to go above 300-400, The computer as is gets the job done but there is some speed to be desired still. Any input/suggestions appreciated.

More RAM should definitely have an effect on editing speed.
A new video card isn't really worth it if all you are doing is editing...I tend to only recommend a new vid card if you are playing a lot of 3D video games...
A CPU upgrade will always increase your speed, as well. Especially for editing.

Thanks trendal. know of any good local suppliers for RAM? how much do you figure a gig would go for these days?

Last time I bought a gig of ram was a year or two ago, so prices have probably dropped a fair bit since then...but at any rate I paid about $275 +tax for my gig of ram - but it was a "matched pair" of OCZ ram for use in a dual-channel DDR setup. At the time I think a gig of regualr ram cost around $200.
If you want a GOOD online supplier from here in Canada, try NCIX.com

www.ncix. is by far the best canadian retailer, low tax, low prices, fast service. What motherboard are you using? P4 chip I assume too? Ram goes for pretty cheap, even the value ram is good and will do you fine.

I'd sell the P4 and motherboard then pick up a mid range s939 board and buy an AMD X2 3800+(they are dirt cheap now) and get some more ram too. Match it if you can.

If you can wait it out another few months, rumor is prices are to drop again on CPU's.
If not cpu prices are already pretty low. You can go two routes, one has been suggested already and that is a S939 board + an AMD X2
But for comparable money you can pick up the newer Intel Cpu's which run better than their amd counter parts. That is if you can afford to sell your current RAM on ebay and pickup new DDR2 Ram

CPU prices drop all the time, but waiting a few months won't be worth how little they drop.
The only reason I wouldn't go the conroe route is because they are underdeveloped motherboard and chipset wise, and a decent motherboard is hella expensive for those chips. DDR2 is a joke, he'd be better off stickin with DDR, even mid range sticks can hit some nice timings. DDR2 is very poor in that area Plus he still running AGP and I think they would be damn poor with conroes.
With AMD s939 he can pick up an awesome budget mobo that supports agp AND pci-e, plus has some minor O/C features if he's into that(ASRock 939DUAL-SATA2)For what he needs and what he wants to spend I think the AMD X2 route is PERFECT.
