Assault rifle or hi-cap ban bet.

By the end of the next election, I propose that there will either be an assault style weapon ban or a high-capacity magazine ban.
I got a baby cutting to offer, or I may be able to find a few other things to bet.

Yea I agree it's very likely. I'm a bit of a gun nut I guess you could say and the funny thing I think about the assault weapon ban is that the people pushing it are simply fooling themselves. They are banning certain models of guns for example while leaving other models of the same gun entirely legal. Not only that but they seem to fail to realize that a regular hunting rifle can be fitted with a magazine with a large number of rounds and can fire just as fast as an "assault rifle".

Though I agree things can be done realistically to help the issue we are discussing I find it funny how stupid they are to support something that obviously will not stop anyone from getting a gun they want and then if they do get an assault weapon ban passed they will act as if they fixed the problem and forget about it. So the way I see it is gun-advocates should probably not speak out to much against the currently proposed assault weapon ban as it still allows you to buy models of AR-15's, AK's, etc and since it does nothing we can then allow the pro-gun control people to think they won, but it would be nice to have a real conversation on realistic solutions.

The criminal gangs seem to have no problem accessing high-capacity weapons so what good would it REALLY do?

I don't know if your serious, but the current proposed assault weapon ban is no different from the one the U.S. had from 1994-2004. Under that law various models of AR-15's were legal. Also you could buy conversion kits to upgrade the legal guns to guns that were covered under the assault weapon ban. There's such an insane number of loopholes in that bill it's like someone blasted it with a shotgun.

I think what we have learned from the synthetics being made to circumvent drug laws is exactly the same as what is going on with banning certain guns as new ones that are just as lethal are made to get around the law. It's a losing battle and that's not even getting into weather the laws work anyways.

As far as I know no caliber is actually being ban or even being discussed. All that is covered is semi auto rifles that have a detachable magazine and at least 2 other features such as a pistol grip, bayonet, telescoping stock, etc. Mostly cosmetic things that do nothing anyways and you can buy those things after market and put them on your gun legally if you wish.

bans only prohibit the production of new stuff for other than for law
enforcement, one of my rifles is a law enforcement only model, during
the previous ban people were still buying ARs but they were 'sporterized'
and once the ban was lifted they could swap the stock, thread the barrel
and have the same scary gun the liberals were crying about, the high
capacity magazines were still being sold, they were stamped Law Enforcement
Use Only but civilians were buying them and it never removed guns from
civilians hands... bans sure do seem pointless

Yup.

The real tragedy is that there is dwindling public support (and funding) for affordible mental health care, from short-term help to addictions treatment to true psychiatric care for folks with major mental health disorders.  Banning firearms is significantly cheaper, faster, and more politically expedient than attacking the multi-faceted gem of mental illness.

The needing to fight against a tyrannical government is an argument that I still think has it's purpose, but is not even relevant anyways.

No you can't get an auto M60 unless you get a permit from the federal government ever since the National Firearms Act of 1934 and good luck with that. That's another good one I hear from liberals often is that people can't buy switchblades but can buy machine guns.
