God Damn Filthy Rats
    #17551540 -

No I don't live in a hovel, but I have rats. Not many I think, but probably one or two. I own my house too so I need to take care of these critters before things get out of hand.

They are in my crawlspace, probably for the last few weeks evidenced by the droppings. Put a few glue traps down against the walls where traffic seemed highest, but nothing for the past 4 days.
My useless cat goes in the crawlspace everyday, he probably made friends with them.

Thinking I need to go with a poison trap, something like this

I'll probably get 3. Put 2 in my crawlspace, and 1 in my shed.
I don't see where they are getting their food, they haven't come into the main floor kitchen (thank god).

Anyone have any experience getting rid of rats?

I seriously hate those fuckers

Mechanical traps are better my friend, I will explain...

this is a common problem in the winter time when rodents try to come in out of the cold looking for shelter and food sources.  Happened to me last year when some firewood I brought home happened to have a nest of mice in it.

if you have seen a rat in your house then it is highly likely there are more.

the first thing you need to do, and this is important.  Go around the outside perimeter of your home and close all the entry points.  If your house has vents in the foundation make sure to check that the screens covering the holes are not damaged and if they have integrated covers, make sure the covers are securely closed.

Next, go through your place and try to figure out how they get in.  At my house it was where the water line comes through the floor to the dishwasher/sink area.  This is wherre you need to place your trap.

After that, figure out what of your food they are getting into and remove the food source by placing it in a high cupboard or a tin with a tight lid the rodent cant get into.  Place another trap near here.  This is very important because if they have other food sources they may avoid the traps... when they get hungry enough they will go for the bait.  So do a good job cleaning up your food scraps, covering your trashcan or placing it outside the back door temporarily or whatever you have to do to make it so.

A word about traps.  Yes, it's true that mechanical spring loaded traps are tricky to set and bait. But there actually are more humane.  Poison traps will allow the little fuckers to die inside your walls or under the house or in your cupboards and rot where they lay, making an unpleasant smell.  I prefer to have a spring trap snap their little necks quickly and humanely dispatching said rodent and then you know for sure you've got 'em.  Glue traps dont always work.  I tried glue traps first and found the mice were eating the bait and walking away leaving little footprints in the glue---  the fuckers!

Once you have killed the rats, and no more are getting in because you eliminated the entry point under the house--  then stuff the holes with steel wool.  Rodents dont like the steel wool, I dont know why but the pest guy swore to me it works so I did it.

then you win... if you're real hungry you can make a stew with 'em but I don't recommend it, rats are sorta gamey and there isn't much meat on 'em.:goodluck:

Thanks travelleler!

I have a couple of mechanical traps but the wife didn't want me to use them because of the cat. I will do the perimeter of the house because I think there is a vent that might be loose or partially broken.

For a food source I'm not sure. We don't keep any foodstuff in the crawlspace and use it for storage only.

Perhaps they are feeding outside and coming in for warmth and shelter?

I don't think they are in my walls, and I don't hear scurrying. Just saw the dropping and cleaned it all up last night so I can monitor how much I find in the next few days, and where the paths are.

Opened my BBQ last night to find one inside! he was about 4" without the tail. Jumped and ran before I could react, now I'm out for blood.

The cat begs to go in the crawlspace but is too meek to do anything about it. We used to have a cat that would seek and destroy any critter that dared to come near, but he was killed by coyotes a few years ago.

The cat we have now was bottle fed because his mom was killed by a neighbor dog when he was 2 weeks. He can't even meow properly.

How about a combo of poison traps and snap traps? the more the merrier?
and I will try the steel wool if I see any potential openings.

Rat stew?????????

:minigun:

yeah buddy, I know that feeling.  I am a homebrewer and the mice got into my $40 bag of grain and shit all in it.  I had to throw it out, total loss.  Then the little asshole got into my emergency food supply by gawing a hole in a rubbermaid tub.  He proceeded to open EVERY fucking BAG and take a bite out of each one.  I was so pissed!!  When I finally trapped him it was the fatest fucking mouse you've ever seen..  like a fuzzy sausage chub with a tail!

Haha, I knew you were not serious about eating them.

I'm just glad i found out before it got too bad. I was putting away Christmas decorations and decided to scan the crawlspace on a hunch. Picked up about 100 droppings

Going to the pest control place this afternoon. I hate that i have to bait these for a week before loading the trap.

Gotta figure out where they are getting their food from.

Thanks for your help!

got a few of those protecta cases with T rex snap traps. Guys told me to use salami, pepperoni, or bacon fat to bait the snap.

Cheaper than online too. Found the cases for 9 bux and the traps for 6. No tax!

:psycho: MUST KILL RATS!

Update:

SUCCESS! Those fuckers were very sneaky and hard to get but i finally got em!

Started with glue traps, then onto baited snap traps. Rats stayed away from those but they loved the green contact blox poison.

They feasted on maybe 16 blocks over 6 days. I thought I would have to call an exterminator but Saturday I found 2 caught in the glue traps (dead) and 1 dead by the poison blocks.

I would recommend those blocks to anyone because the rats stayed away from pepperoni and peanut butter. Those blocks smelled like cream soda, and they ate it the first night I set it out.

I'm keeping the traps and bait out for another month to monitor activity and i think I found the entry point (which I blocked with steel wool.)

Feeling good

Lol, I dangled the dead rat in his face and yelled "I did what you could not!"

he seemed unimpressed and then meowed for wet food...

useless cat is useless

not my cat, but this is what he would do

Our cat acts like he's on a permanent meth binge.
Keeps the house rodent-free, though!

We had a cat that was killed by coyotes a few years ago that would have been death incarnate to those rodents.

We had daily "presents" when we lived by a park.
Moles, mice, rabbits, robins, and once a bluejay

He would also keep some alive too under his paw waiting for us to come to the door. One time I told him to get rid of it, so he beheaded it and ate it right in front of me leaving only the paws and tail...

I miss that cat

GOOD NEWS!  glad to hear it...  I wonder what would've happened if you baited the snap traps with the poison that smells like cream soda.  The old style snap traps aren't always sensitive enough--  I found the mice would eat the bait and walk away half the time but the new style plastic traps are designed better and work well.

anyway-- good luck, the ones that you trap without poison after you skin them if you clean the ribcage out nicely you can wedge a decent sized chunk of pineapple and a slice of cheese inside and then wrap it in bacon and close it all together with a BBQ skewer.  roast til done-- bon apetit

I did get the plastic T-rex snap traps. Crazy sensitive...

I will be baiting then with small chunks of the poison and leave them down there.

Thanks for the rat recipes  :whateveryousayfreak:

Maybe brass wool would be better, because steel wool will rust and crumble if the air is humid.

Wirewool is the stuff you want to use.

Then fill around it with expanding foam.
