Scaly little fellas

Habitat:
Growing on a lawn.

Gills:
Appeared to be grayish although when separated seemed white but darkening towards the edges (??), crowded.

Stem:
Some 8 cm in height, solid slightly widening towards the base, white.

Cap:
Big cap (it was all you could see when first spotting it) about 5 cm in height and bell-shaped. With cream/brownish scales and white flesh underneath.

Spore print color:
I was intending to bring them with me, but then I noticed they were serving as a shelter from the rain for a family of baby slugs and decided to leave them :tongue2:

Bruising:
No bruising.

Other information:
At first glimpse (and seeing such grayish gills) I thought about C. comatus but these didn't have a ring and the fact that the ruined specimen on the side wasn't already deliquescent made me think otherwise (also their scales are usually different). Maybe something in the Leucoagaricus group?

Some kind of coprinoid, or Leucocoprinus... Unusual looking species.

Yes, this kind of reminded me of Leucocoprinus birnbaumii type (although different color) which is the only Leucocoprinus sp I have ever found, but these looked bigger.

Not having a ring and those grey edged gills puzzled me a bit :confused:

There's a patch of really little ones growing nearby, I don't know if it's the same species (I think so) but I'll try to follow their growth, hopefully they won't get ruined by the rain.

Watch to see if they are deliquescent.  The dark gills make me think some kind of coprinoid is more likely, as leucocoprinus have a white sporeprint.  Interesting find.

Has a slightly different look then what I call that here in the states, I wonder if they're the same?

Edit:  I bet pouihi's has a much better chance of being the true C. romagnesiana.

Thank you all for the inputs, Coprinopsis romagnesiana does seem like a pretty good match!
I'll check them later when I take my dog out to see if they're already deliquescent :tongue2:

Byrain, I'll also check on the little guys, maybe I can get some specimens in better shape.

The ones on Uljé's site appear to have a different type of scales, more C. comatus alike.

I'd be interested but how can I do that? I don't have much experience with drying mushrooms let alone coprinoid :shrug:

For a simple way that usually works even with inky caps (if you hurry) would be to put them on paper towels and stick them in front of a fan turned up to the highest setting (Lower settings work too for non-deliquescent lbms).  Then wait till cracker dry, cutting larger specimens into smaller pieces like cross sections can speed up the process.

I found a specimen which seems to be in conditions:





I was expecting for the deliquescence to happen much more quickly, the other coprinus I found turned into black ink in a matter of a few hours.

I'm putting it to dry right away :tongue2:

My drying didn't work out so good, I guess I'll have to wait for the little ones to dry and give it another try.
