Intel Set to destroy the cable model as we know it

Intel Is Reportedly Going To Destroy The Cable Model By Offering People The Ability To Subscribe To Individual Channels
Jay Yarow | Jan. 1, 2013

Intel is reportedly on the cusp of delivering something that consumers around the world have been wanting for a long, long time.

Kelly Clay at Forbes reports Intel is going to blow up the cable industry with its own set-top box and an unbundled cable service.

Clay says Intel is planning to deliver cable content to any device with an Internet connection. And instead of having to pay $80 a month for two hundred channels you don't want, you'll be able to subscribe to specific channels of your choosing.

Here's the key paragraph:

This set-top box, said by industry insiders to be available to a limited beta of customers in March, will offer cable channels delivered “over the top” to televisions anywhere there is an Internet connection regardless of provider. (Microsoft Mediaroom, for example, requires AT&T’s service, and Xbox has limited offerings for Comcast and FiOS customers). For the first time, consumers will be able to subscribe to content per channel, unlike bundled cable services, and you may also be able to subscribe per show as well. Intel’s set-top box will also have access to Intel’s already existing app marketplace for apps, casual games, and video on demand. Leveraging the speed of current broadband, and the vast shared resources of the cloud, Intel plans to give customers the ability to use “Cloud DVR”, a feature intended to allow users to watch any past TV show at any time, without the need to record it ahead of time, pause live tv, and rewind shows in progress.

This is a holy-grail of sorts for people that subscribe to cable.

We've been skeptical of Intel's ability to make a dent in the TV market. If it somehow manages to deliver this unbundled channel option, we're more optimistic Intel could have success.

Before anyone gets too excited, Janko Roettgers at GigaOm is skeptical it happens. Roettgers knows the TV business very well.

The reason its unlikely to happen is that content companies don't really want to see cable blown up. It's been very good to them.

Last summer, Peter Kafka at All Things D poured cold water on the idea of Intel unbundling. Not only is going to be hard to make it happen, it's unclear if it would even save money for cable subscribers:

Those bundles are core to today’s TV ecosystem. And the TV guys insist that consumers really don’t want “a la carte” programming, because if they do, the channels/shows they like today will end up costing much, much more.

Disney, for instance, charges TV distributors about $5 for every subscriber that gets ESPN. And, by some estimates, only about 25 percent of cable customers actually watch ESPN on a regular basis. So if you unbundled ESPN, the per-subscriber cost might shoot up to $20 or more, to account for the 75 percent drop in its customer base.

I understand Intel is running into problems negotiating content availability with content providers. I'm convinced that at some point, the heterogeneous content mix model that Intel currently advocates will win, but it's going to take a lot of time and effort and cable companies can be expected to pull every trick up their sleeves to thwart it.

It's the future, but the current TV industry has a lot of money, and they sure do like the old broken model that they currently use. They're going to fight it all the way.

I'd buy one of these boxes though

You're probably right. Hollywood isn't going to make it easy. But Intel has a lot of power.. it should be interesting...

and how is intel doing this? I skimmed over the article, I didn't see anything about network switches or bandwidth, just that set top boxes will be using intel chips.

And I couldn't just use a computer with bittorrent to download the shows I want, because?

You can do that now...

I see this more as Intel saying F You to the cable conglomerates..
If this went through it would no doubt throw a huge monkey wrench into that market.
They would be forced to change the way they do things, I suspect it would cause a domino effect.

They haven't laid out all of the details yet... but the way they explain it, it sounds to me like
- You only pay for the channels you want
- You have instant access to those channels on your TV / PC / Smartphone over Cloud DVR - You can watch any show any time.

I probably wouldn't even bother with it as I don't even watch TV... but I might because there's like TWO channels I like, but I can't be fucked to pay $70 a month for watching one channel an hour a week and having 250 channels of crap. This would just be super convenient for a lot of people.

yeah sure you can go torrent stuff... that's not the point.

And you wonder why Comcast/ATT Uverse now limits downloads to 250gb a month.... sure as shit wasn't because it was costing them more or there wasn't enough bandwith to go around... They want to control the type of content we consume... They realize the threat.

Why wouldn't they be able to do this? This is just a hardware company moving into the domain of software/content in order to enjoy the higher margins associated with those products. The Intel hardware that's being sold is a nice bonus; a substantial one, but still a bonus.

Technically, you could, but that would most likely be illegal, while the Intel route is of course legal, as you pay for the content.

The content providers do not make it easy for the big cable companies either. And the fact is you can't stop progress. It's like a moving train. You get in the way and you get run over. I would never bet against any innovation in media or communications distribution.

Or move to Kansas :grrr:  Seems like we might be waiting a long time to fully give the bird to Comcast  (or one of its facsimiles).

I will consider the legality of copying a television program that I can watch on youtube or the channels website whilst next consuming cannabis.
