Conocybe cyanopus?
    #1739554 - 07/22/03 08:13 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

I recently came accross what I think to be Conocybe cyanopus, but I'm a bit worried that they might be Conocybe coprophila. Basically I'd like to know what are the differences between the two species. Does coprophia bruise blue? I'm almost positive the mushrooms are cyanopus but you can never be to careful. Any information would be appreciated. By the way I found them gowing from manure in a compost pile.

Conocybe cyanopus is a spring mushroom approximately less thqn three inches high growing main opn sphaghum moss along streams and riverbanks along the I-5 corridor from Bandon Oregon to british Coloumbia . It never grows in manure. It only has a blue tinge at the bulbous base of the bottom of the shroom after being lifted fromn the earth.

Conocybe lactea is a manure conocybe. I always suggest that people avoid the conocybe, Gyymnopiulus and inocybe species which have psilocybine/psilocine becasue of their macroscopic association with dealy poisonous shrooms such as Galerinas and Concocybe filaris which contain the same toins found in the deadly Amanitas.

Conocybe cyanopus and Conocybe smithii are spring to early summer mushrooms and are usually never found after the first week of june on the west coast.

Goodbye.

as the FAQ says that there is no description available and people don't seem to hae even heard of it, i'd say that the odds of that question being answered are not great.

i'd be interested to find out more about this mushroom too if anybody knows anything.

[edit: in regaurd to C. cyanopus, Mr. Mushrooms hight have some insight for you.]

Here is a description of Conocybe coprophila (listed as Pholiotina coprophila) from Moser (Keys to Agarics and Boleti):

On dung. Cap slightly greasy, at first flatly conical, then convex, clay-ochre-pallid, 1-2 cm. Lamellae rust-brown-yellow. Stipe white, somewhat shaggy-tomentose, 2-4 cm long, 1-2 mm thick. Spores 11-14/7-7.2 ?m.

The genus description for Pholiotina (which you need also for an ID) is:

Cap conical-campanulate, often fairly flat (like Conocybe). Stipe having ring or cap margin with veil remnants, or if these completely absent then cap pruinose (magnifying glass!) and stipe whitish, white-yellowish, pale grey. Cap skin cellular. Lamellae trama regular with clearly developed mediostratum, cystidia usually not capitate. Spores smooth, with germination pore. Spore powder ochre-rusty.

Happy mushrooming!

Conocybe coprophila (=Pholiotina coprophila) is not the same mushroom as C. cyanopus. P. coprophila is listed as the only Pholiotina without a recognizable partial veil which grows on dung. C. cyanopus does not grow on dung.

Moser (in Keys to Agarics and Boleti) gives a description for Conocybe cyanopus (listed as Pholiotina cyanopus) as follows:

Stipe old or bruised greenish or bluish, especially at base, otherwise silvery- to grey-white, 1-3.5 cm tall, 1-1.5 mm thick. Cap 0.3-2.5 cm, bluntly conical to hemispherical, sulcate, ochre to brown. Spores 7-10/4-5 ?m. Turf.

Just saw this older thread recently. I picked Concybe Cyanopus back in the 1970s in late August in older cow patures between Portland and Astoria. They were growing in moss at the base of sedge grasses. A frail watery fungi that lightly blued at the base. Weakly active, but they were active. Any one else experience these? I agree with mj that it is best avoided unless positively id.

sorry if this is a little too off topic, but I don't think I can start threads yet and have a desperate question.  my friend found some little brown mushrooms that he thinks may be conocybe cyanopus.  I jokingly licked one before realizing what a bad idea that was.  I know that worse-case scenario, it could be a mushroom with potent amatoxins.  it's been almost 24 hrs.  should i be worried just about licking it?  i definitely didn't ingest any pieces.  and yes i know how idiotic that was.
