The Hobbit
    #17400593 -

Anyone seen it?  I thought it was great .I watched it at IMAX #D 24fps so I have not comment on the whole 48fps business.

It's busy breaking records everywhere (which I guess means something if you ignore inflation).

Still not sure how their gonna make it a trilogy now but what the hell.  I'm sure a 12 hour Hobbit movie will be alright

i saw it...pretty awesome
but pretty fuckin retarded how they took 3 hours just to set up a story. nothing really happened. it was very long and drawn out and didnt really have much of a plot.

but i guess thats what these movies do. now they get 3 movies worth of profit instead of just one.
makes sense i guess

Nah, Peter Jackson just can't help himself.  The oroginal trilogy could have been a LOT better if they weren't sooooooo dragged out.  Especially Return of the King which could have ended five times before it actually did.

Now, he has taken The Hobbit, which is the shortest book in the entire series, and made three movies out of it, the first of which is near 3 hours long???

Sounds a bit like torture.

I don't know, I kind of enjoy the extra bullshit. Beats cheap thrill hollywood movies. As much as I like action, I like that they take the time to set up the full story and not just pick out the highlights. Of course you'd hate it if you didn't plan on watching the rest though, but I'm pretty optimistic that they will complete the story quite nicely when they come out.

I saw it, it was pretty good. I don't mind being dragged along through a somewhat tedious story when the universe that its in is so dank looking with a bunch of likable characters.

All that extra "bullshit" would actually have been part of The Hobbit if Tolkien would have lived.  He planned to rewrite the entire book.  Many of these plot points and notes are in the appendices of LOTR.

It's not like Peter Jackson is just making these things up in his head.  As a Tolkien fan, I love it.  It ties both stories together and makes the world seem more believable.

I thought this first film was funny, engrossing, action packed, sad, and inspiring.  Just like it was intended to be.  It's not Peter Jackson's fault that people love these stories, and he and his production team do them serious justice.  Just watch the appendices on the LOTR Extended trilogy and see how complex and intricate every part of production is.  It's mind-blowing.  Almost no one in Hollywood can make a great film anymore.

Oh, and for your information, LOTR was intended as one book.  The publishers refused to print it as one book and forced Tolkien to split it into 3 books.  It was never intended as a trilogy.

I actually liked it better than the other movies. Elijah Wood not playing the main character was a big plus.

That's cool man.  Miss out.  That's your right, even if your reason for doing so makes no sense.

If it was truly "just about the money" then these movies would suck.  You like the LOTR trilogy even though it made over a billion dollars.

The film was expanded into more than one film because if you tried to be faithful to the book and tell it in one movie you would either have a 6 hour movie, or a movie that cuts huge chunks out of the book.

That's why it was expanded, to do it justice.  Of course making money is a factor.  If you think it isn't a factor in every Hollywood film ever made then your nuts.  And if you like any film that made money you're a hypocrite.

and no im not a hypocrite, jackson said a long time ago that this would be ONE movie and it wouldnt be in 3d, other movies DID NOT make those promises then go back on it like a dirty indian giver, those moves were SIMPLY bc of the money

and LOTR was 3 books so 3 movies makes sense, hobbit was one book so give it one movie, 3 is just them trying to make way more cash by beating a dead horse, have fun watching bullshit...i could care less about this movie

Okie dokie.

You win.  You're the all-knowing, all-seeing epitome of truth.  I, on the other hand, have no knowledge.  I forgot that LOTR is ONE book, not three.  I forgot that the goal of a movie was to make money and has absolutely nothing to do with entertainment.

You make me feel better about myself.  Thank you.

but honestly i do win most of the time, like now for example

LOTR was over 1000 pages, hobbit was like 250 or sumthing...do the math

with yor logic they shuda made like 6 LOTR movies then instead of 3

Re: The Hobbit [Re: Bassfreak]

You're correct.  LOTR is over 1,000 pages, which is precisely why the publishers forced Tolkien to split it in thirds as the cost of printing a book so large in those days would have prevented most people from being able to afford it.

If it was printed today it would be a single book.

Also, since each of the LOTR movies was over 3 hours long and the average movie is about 90 minutes I'd say they could have easily made 6 movies out of it.

And sorry, I don't take Tolkien's work as seriously as you seem to believe.  The problem here isn't my facts on these works.  The problem is you have no idea what you're talking about.  Like how you keep referring to LOTR as a trilogy when it is no such thing.

But I'm done arguing with you.  I made this thread to discuss the movie, not to school someone who doesn't know the facts about Tolkien's work or it's history.  So ahead and make your predictable response to this post and then go find another thread to spread misinformation in.

This thread is for the discussion of the The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, not a thread to argue easily debunked claims about the source material, nor the financial goals of the movies producers, nor to show just how cynical and uninformed someone can be on a subject they clearly know nothing about.  Sorry if I like Tolkien's work and know a thing  or two about it and it's author.

So once again, who has SEEN this movie and what did you think?  It's okay if you didn't like it.  Just don't weigh in with unnecessary negativity if you haven't seen this film.

QFMFT! I read all of the novels and recently saw the movie. They do a wonderful job setting up the story and I was very happy to see some of the small details that movies seem to miss being mentioned. I am also glad they did not try to shove it all in ne movie because it really would not have done shit for justice. If you have read the novels then you will enjoy the hobbit. Bear in mind it has a slow start but that is just because the story has to be set up completely first.

Bassfreak, you are a perfect example of what is wrong with this world. Everything I have ever read that has been posted by is is immature bullshit. I would not be surprised in the slightest if you were just another underage kid with access to the internet. And if you are not, you sure have a WHOLE lot of growing up to do man because you think you know the answer to everything. That is exactly what ignorant kids do. Next time you want to say something you should count to 10 and don't.
