You sound like you're still in high school. Those stupid assumptions you hold will keep you from learning some valuable things from what is the online equivalent of a free, constantly updated encyclopedia. Wikipedia is incredibly reliable and up to date especially for the sciences. I go to a top research university, btw.

The sources people have retrieved information from are sometimes a valuable resource on Wikipedia. Sometimes they're terrible. Depends what you're looking for.
It's a good vantage point and sometimes has even pushed some needless studying out of my way to attack a thesis better.

from what i know it's good for finding other sources but not sourcing directly. i like wiki, don't get me wrong, but i've always been instructed to steer clear from directly citing it in any sort of academic work. i tend to not even cite it in casual conversations on forums unless it's just something really basic or i'm not defending a position.

You attend a university where you pay hundreds of dollars to study outdated information?
My university uses books as well, just like most other big universities. I said that one class I'm in uses wikipedia, and somehow you're implying that my entire university is shit because of it? It seems like you're stuck in the closed minded idea that wikipedia sucks that teachers in high school try to instill so that you wont cite it all the time.
The reality is that wikipedia worked incredibly well for my molecular biology class and has just as much real information as any textbook you'd find but it's all up to date and links to a direct citation that is usually a recent journal publication. Do you really honestly think wikipedia isn't as good as a textbook despite the fact that it has much more information than any one textbook could hold, is up to date and free? Or are you just trying to be a condescending asshole? Because I can play that game too and I'm certain your university would pale in comparison to the academics at mine unless you're Ivy, which I doubt.

Is using it as a textbook really even comprable to "directly citing it in any sort of academic work"? I'll answer that for you: no, because you'd be a fool if you cited your textbook in a serious academic work as well.

like i said, it's useful for finding sources, but because anyone can get on wiki and write anything, directly citing wiki articles is typically frowned on. i don't know if your university is shit or not. honestly i don't really care. i prefer urban dictionary for my academic work anyway.

It's useful for up to date information as well as finding sources. There's a wealth of information right at your fingertips but just because "anyone can edit it" and high school teachers want their students to learn how to find real sources, you're brushing it off. Wikipedia is heavily monitored and when edits make it in that are false or not linked to a valid citation, they're usually removed pretty quickly. If you don't care if my university is shit, why did you feel the need to rag on me for sharing with other posters the fact that wikipedia is better than most textbooks especially in the area of the sciences?

It isn't, I go to the same Uni and it has consistently been in the top ten engineering schools in the WORLD.

okay, so for the third time i'm going to say that we agree on this. perhaps you may find this article useful.

i'm not "ragging on you", but it's pretty standard practice to avoid wiki.
harvard's thoughts on sourcing wikipedia.
m.i.t.'s wiki sourcing policy.
my school's policy on wiki sourcing.
seeing that it's standard to not use wiki for primary sourcing, i was making a joke about said use. for more information on jokes, visit this page.

Check out your library. I just check my text books out the at the beginning of the semester and just renew them all semester. And my school has this thing with other libraries in my state so I can get the books from other schools libraries as well. I have paid like $300 in the past 4 years on college text books.
