Am listening to the Denial of Death audiobook

I realise that I'm going to have to study it in depth to get the most out of it, because it's a very original and rich work. The main thing I got out ouf it is that anyone who thinks about it will realise that life is terrible, and the only way to deal with it is by having courage.

Even if your life is extraordinarily difficult, this doesn't alter the basic fact that only by having enough courage will you be able to deal with it.

I will listen to it again tomorrow, is there anything I ought to consider as I do?

You have an interesting take on that book. I've read it several times myself and I really wouldn't agree at least the way you are saying it here. In fact Becker's premise is that no one has enough courage to face DA full on but instead we all need shields to buffer us from that full awareness.

  BTW it's really part of a trilogy imo.  The others are "The Birth and Death of Meaning and Escape from Evil". The last one was written while he was himself dying and so it very poignant imo.

That's how I felt when I first read it -- I need to study it. It's become one of my favorite books. :thumbup:

I think that's a really cool take of just having enough courage to face it.

Since we live in a duality of material and symbolic, it's natural for us to want to transcend it. Becker personally thought that there was no clear cut solution to this and that we'll never fully transcend it. He does point to "Tillich's courage to stand up in the face of the cosmos solution" like you mentioned, but he just points to it as an example of a better illusion.

I personally think that it's just how humans are just like a flower is. It's part of our nature and part of what it means to be human with a sense of self. It's not bad or good.

I'd say when you go through it next, just keep in mind how you construct your sense of self and how you view your self. From my experience and others who I've shared it with, it can really change you if you let it.

By the way, where did you get it on tape? :tongue:

DOD is one of my favs. as icy pointed out it is best read as a trilogy starting with the birth and death of meaning and ending with escape from evil. these books have made me question everything i thought i knew and i feel i'm a better person for it. beckers other books are surprisingly stuffy compared with the three mentioned. his private memoirs have also recently been published and i've been meaning to read them. you should also check out terror management theory and sheldon solomon for some empiricle studies using beckers ideas. if you can't tell he's kinda my hero  :bashful:

you can't deny this is one of their best albums.  i just wish it wasn't such a lousy recording.
