the worst made t.v's ?
    #17127142 -

is this an appropriate place to shitcan brands ?
i would like to say dont buy a conia t.v , the thing shat itself a month or so after the year warranty:mad2:
it began after some turd took out power lines , then the standby switch would just click for 10 minutes or so before stopping and allowing itself to be turned on.
after the last shitbird took out the power the thing just clicks for hours and now wont stop and wont turn back on.
gotta love that chinese craftsmanship:cuteshit:

1.  Stop blaming the Chinese.  It's the same people make these 'Conia' electronics as makes the MacBook Pro Air Starbucks special.  Your TV is crap because of how much it cost to make, not who made it.

2. Sounds like a similar problem to a lot of Samsung screens (which aren't a shitcan brand).  Self-fixable if you're happy to solder a few parts.

Chinese industrial espionage is responsible for billions of dollars in losses in the US (and world wide) electronics market a few years back.

> Your TV is crap because of how much it cost to make, not who made it.

Yes and no... who made it was chosen to reduce the cost of making it, so they do go hand in hand.  I'm not saying that something is crap because it was made in China.  Rather, as far as crap goes, China is much better at producing it cheaper than others.

I agree. And that cost isn't really something to hold the Chinese responsible for; it's us in the West who ask to shave every last penny from the design so it can manufactured cheaply. In this particular case, it sounds like some basic safety provisions for power outages/brownouts were omitted from the power supply to eliminate perhaps $0.30 from the total bill of materials.

> Chinese industrial espionage is responsible for billions of dollars in losses in the US (and world wide) electronics market a few years back.
'Industrial espionage' comes in two important ways, I think. The first is the kind of espionage that consists of people breaking into companies (digitally, usually, or by infiltrating them) and stealing intellectual property for high-value/high-complexity products. My guess is that this has more of a strategic (military) impact than en economic one. The other kind, which seems much more economically relevant, simply consists of the Chinese buying a western product, taking it apart and creating their own clone. You may think this is unfair, but to the Chinese, this is just a valid way to conduct business. So maybe we need to rethink our strategy for creating value. That, or we need to take over the Chinese legal + political system by force and change China's culture. Which one is more realistic, you think?

Sometimes stuff that is manufactured cheaply is pretty cool, I've owned a good handful of moderately expensive monitors out there: 2x Apple Thunderbolt Displays, a Dell Ultrasharp U2711, a Samsung PLS display (all retailed at roughly $1k), but also have a couple $300 korean displays that use the same 27" LG 2560x1440p panel, but were rejected by Apple/Dell for whatever reason... they have no dead pixels/BLB and look every bit as good, but they real stripped down: lack a scalar, have only brightness controls, and have placeholder buttons for a non-existent OSD  I truly without hesitation can say that I prefer them to the Apple ones, which have absurdly reflective tempered glass over the screen, and the Dell which has a super aggressive matte coating on it.  These are just glossy displays w/o tempered glass, they're kindah rickety, but they just don't exist this way on the market anywhere else... and if they die, they're cheap enough that I'll just buy more.

This is what happened in China with Japan.  A Chinese guy stole the electrolyte formula used in capacitors from a Japanese manufacturing company.  He started a company in China that produced stolen electrolyte and sold it cheaply to Chinese capacitor manufacturers.  Billions of cheap electrolytic capacitors were produced and sold at prices that undercut the legitimate manufacturers.  Unfortunately, the formula he stole was incomplete and lacked a key component that re-uptakes any released hydrogen.  Over time, the hydrogen inside the capacitor would build up until the capacitor can ruptured leading to catastrophic failure of the part.  Dell, Apple, HP, and many other manufacturers were victims.

Funnily enough, OP may be a victim of this particular failing - the non-starting popping clicking TV set may very well be down to faulty caps - it's certainly the reason why the Samsungs fail with the same symptoms.

Isn't this a supply chain issue though?  At some point, a manufacturer (Foxconn I'd guess with the companies you've mentioned) decided to drop their existing proven supplier for a cheaper, unproven supplier.  This is nothing inherently Chinese, it's capitalist if anything.  Foxconn see's they can cut 3% off the BOM, offers a 2% reduction to Apple et. al., nobody cares where the saving came from until the problem appears.

I know a LOT of shoddy goods come from China, but that's only because the bulk of electronics is assembled there.  If they make 90% of the stuff, they can't help but be responsible for 90% of the crap.

What really grinds my gears is when China is blamed for producing nothing but crap by Americans who think that if it were made in the USA it would be awesome.  Get a quote from a US manufacturer, then see what your Chinese supplier can do for the same money - chances are it'll blow away the US version!

Sorry if I've gone a bit nonsensical ranty, but it always seems to me that it's a one way street, this "chinese crap" argument.  My laptops, ipods, TVs and phones were ALL made in China, and they've served me very well.  I don't get how a Chinese manufactured phone branded "Samsung" is an awesome Samsung product, but my wife's unbranded £5 ebay hairdryer is a shitty Chinese product!

The only stereotype I can go along with in the world of engineering is that a German made product will be a well made product.  The rest is as good as the budget it was built to.

Generally, the designer supplies the assembler with the components.

Even worse then - it's the US side of things that's making poor supply chain decisions!

> Isn't this a supply chain issue though?
That doesn't mean anything - everything is a supply chain issue. What you're saying is that you believe companies like Apple don't look deep enough into their supply chains, causing them to miss essential information. That certainly happens, but I don't think they are completely unaware of what happens in their SC's (i.e. behind companies like Foxconn). I do think that they mostly focus on KPIs that say something about the performance companies like Apple are trying to optimize, such as delivery flexibility and quality levels.

> Generally, the designer supplies the assembler with the components.
Not necessarily, and I'd actually say: in most cases not. Big OEMs tend to negotiate supply contracts for some key components, but the whole idea of using companies like Foxconn is to get rid of the need to manage a large supply chain. So many components, especially the more generic and low-value ones, are usually sourced by the EMS (e.g. Foxconn).

Yeah, I was trying to say that someone, somewhere along the line dropped their proven supplier to go with an unproven cheaper supplier.  It must have been OK'd with the end customer either directly or by delegation, so it's not "the Chinese" who are to blame - it's the decision maker, and ultimately, the customer.  I think.

I'm just sick of all the China bashing that goes off!  Leave China alone! [/emorant]

I see what you mean, but to be honest, there are so many things that can happen in a supply chain that ultimately affect quality. Switching suppliers is one, but there's many, many more. Interesting stuff, it can keep you occupied all day

I had a Sanyo 27 inch I got from Wal-mart for like $300 bucks, it didn't last more than 6 months and the picture started to get fuzzy. Meanwhile my 42 inch Panasonic I got for $1800 in 2005 keeps working like a champ.

You'd think with high volume manufacturing they'd be aiming to ultimately transition to having the entire supply chain within the same city... need a million of this component, we'll have that for you in an hour.

Wall-to-wall is an option, but only if the components used are exclusive for one customer. Otherwise it usually doesn't make sense. That's why you mainly see wall-to-wall concepts in the automotive industry. On the other hand, in regions where there's e.g. heavy machinery industry, there's usually a 'shell' of mechanics/mechatronics suppliers around, forming a cluster. The same can be seen in other industries. Porter wrote a hugely popular book about this.

On the topic of tv's Panasonic has never let me down. Have one going on 10 years and just bought another one. Best value best performance plasma. Just looking at Best Buys online site you can see a huge list of Samsung refurbs, hmmmm, going for the same price as quality brand new Panasonic. Used to like Sony back in the day but they should probably change their name to Samsung-Sony having cracked open a few of their newer models and seen parts inside mostly stamped with Samsung. I feel like Samsung does put a lot of effort into the overall design of a product, but it only takes one corner cut in the wrong place to ruin everything and this seems to have been an issue with them quite often. A lot of you guys are taking issue with people calling stuff that is chinese junk from a manufacturing standpoint while I know that whenever I usually use the term it is from a design standpoint. Anyone can follow some instructions and put a baggie of parts together if they are even half competent, it's mostly the guy who came up with the instructions who is gonna be in control of the overall quality of the end piece.
